Yankee Gift Exchange
Similar to the White Elephant Exchange, the Yankee Exchange is an opportunity to bring a group of people together without the stress of finding the perfect gift for a Secret Santa exchange. The basic rules of Yankee Swap start like White Elephant: Everyone is randomly assigned a number, then the first player chooses a prize and opens it.
The next player will choose their gift, and then open or exchange it with the previous player's unwrapped gift. If your gift is taken, you can choose a new unwrapped gift to open. However, there are several variations of Yankee Swap that can make the game more interesting.
Never participated in a Yankee swing? We've got you covered. Here's what you need to know: In Yankee Swap, there is no fixed number of players—but the more people involved, the more the game gets. It's best to work with no less than five or six people to provide enough variety and options to keep the fun going.
How Many Can Play Yankee Swap?
To start, everyone brings a wrapped gift. Gifts should not be marked in any way to create a surprise. It's a good idea to set a maximum usage limit, so the game is fair for everyone. Some groups like to do their own Yankee Swaps theme—for example, everyone should get the perfect beach vacation gift, or they should choose a food-related gift.

Whatever you decide, make sure everyone agrees on the rules beforehand. Everyone should wrap their gifts in a pile for everyone to see. Then, everyone picks a number from the hat (make sure there are the same number of people). Whoever picks one number picks a rolled grain and opens it in front of everyone.
After the first player opens a gift, the next person has the option of a) opening a new gift from the remaining selection pile or b) taking an already opened gift from the first player. If he decides to steal a gift from the first person, then that person gets to open a new gift.
This continues for each player in a row. For example, the third party then has the opportunity to a) also reveal a new gift or b) steal any gift that has already been opened. Note that the recipient can only open a new gift—and not change it.
What To Bring To A Yankee Swap
This continues until every gift has been opened and everyone has had a chance to choose a gift. One of the joys of exchanging gifts is that you can add your own twist to make it personal. One difference with Yankee Swap is that when each prize is unlocked, the first player is then allowed to exchange their prize for another.
This means that the first person basically gets to choose every prize every time. Another option: The player can decide to exchange his prize with anyone. For gift exchanges, the recipient can decide to keep the exchanged gift or exchange it for someone else. This continues until someone decides to have their gift.

This is a great way to maximize your Yankee Exchange if it ends quickly. If you want to mix up the style, you can use two sets of playing cards. Players can choose the same cards. Another is shuffled, and then the top card is turned over.
Whoever has the same card in their hand goes first. This continues until all the gifts have been opened. Note: Exchanging gifts is meant for fun, so it's important not to take it too seriously. Let's say you got a bad gift - that's part of the experience, and maybe next year you'll have better luck.
Who Goes First?
That said, it's a good idea to encourage attendees not to bring unwanted gifts that no one wants. The idea is to give a gift that pleases and entices people to steal their gaming time. If you're struggling to find a good Yankee Swap gift, try focusing on options that are popular with everyone.
Maybe a fun kitchen gadget like a waffle maker or a new coffee pot or coffee maker. Keep the gift regardless of gender, and focus on your audience. The gift your child brings to school for Yankee Swap will, of course, be different than what you bring to your boss's Yankee Swap.
Most of all, take this time to enjoy the people in your life and make memories that last longer than the pot you won. - The recommendations are independently selected by the review editors. Purchases you make through the links below may earn us and our publishing partners a commission.
