NewsChannel 9's Andrew Donovan tried to buy a $30 pair of baby shoes from LittleWonders.com with a gift card. With $30 of credit remaining, the website still asked for credit card information to cover the $18 shipping fee. The scheme isn't necessarily illegal, and while online stores sell genuine products, research shows that the company makes money by pretending to offer credit, but charging more for shipping that the gift card won't cover.

That same result is consistent with complaints made to the Better Business Bureau from consumers who were charged more for shipping than if they hadn't used gift cards. All companies listed on the gift cards are operated by Mother Lounge, which did not respond to NewsChannel 9's request for comment.
