By Bus[Edit]
Foreigners no longer require a travel permit (Surat Jalan) to enter Aceh, but an Indonesian visa is required. A 30-day visa on arrival is possible at Banda Aceh Airport. Although this only applies to Malaysian residents, the embassy in Kuala Lumpur can sometimes process visas on the same day if all paperwork is completed before noon.
There are non-stop night buses with a journey time of 9-13 hours - Medan to Banda Ach. Major bus companies PMTOH, Pelangi, Kurnia and Pusaka have their offices on Jl. Gaj Mada, Medan. Prices range from IDR 110,000 for a standard-size bus to IDR 200,000 for a wide-seat bus.

Mini-buses can take you from the Medan area to Banda Aceh, but the journey is usually longer. Cheaper than bins. It is also possible to travel from Medan to Banda Ach via Kutakane and Takengon. Becak (motorcycle taxi) and labi-labi (public minibus) are the main ways to get around. The sudden influx of money after the tsunami made locals accustomed to overcharging, but now stability has returned. Food stalls and padang restaurants are open in unsanitary areas of the city and fruit carts are everywhere. Along with JL Tengku Iskandar on the west side of the city, there are some great coffee houses around Ulei Kareng with soothing rice dishes. Three fast food chain restaurants A&W, KFC and Pizza Hut can be found in the center.
Like all travelers you need common sense and a good attitude to get along in this small town. However, there are some points to keep in mind. Although Banda Aceh is safer than most European cities today, it is best not to go out alone after 22:00.
Since the implementation of Sharia law, drinking alcohol is not allowed, although it is still possible. Violations of locally defined Sharia law can lead to arrest by the Sharia police, corporal punishment and public ridicule of the guilty Muslim.
