These are all Stephen Starr restaurants, and a massive ransomware attack halted gift card sales at all of them for more than a week.

The problem began on April 12 when Atlanta-based NCR Corporation fell victim to a ransomware attack. NCR is a technology company that provides all kinds of products and services to all kinds of companies across the country. From point-of-sale terminals to ATMs and barcode scanners, everything is made by NCR.
I'm going to tell you all the technical jargon that Jason Miller, Stephen Starr's VP of IT, told me on Wednesday afternoon. But suffice it to say, the ransomware attack affected the technology used to sell gift cards at all of Stephen Starr's restaurants and the company's website.
Miller said NCR's latest update on the ransomware attack indicates service should be restored by Friday. But Miller plans to wait a few days, and do a series of tests before allowing restaurants to resume sales. His best estimate is that he will be fully recovered by early next week.

Randy Sirkin, Starr's vice president of creative services, pointed out that customers can now redeem previously purchased gift cards. Miller also confirms that there will be no impact on the balance of these cards. None of the other major restaurant groups in Philadelphia appear to have been affected by the NCR ransomware attack.

There was no word on how much ransom the hackers were demanding or if NCR was paying it. Maybe the Hackers will top the top 4 at the Park this Saturday night. Oh, I hope our editor-in-chief, Brian Howard, doesn't quit today. When SEPTA released the SEPTA key a few years ago, I hated it.
Brian, meanwhile, is a big fan. In fact, we wrote a lukewarm review of it in the magazine, where I gave it a D for technology and Brian gave it a B+. Brian expected to see a headline in the Inquirer that said, "After $236 million, SEPTA plans to ditch keycards, look for smartphone-enabled system."
Womp. Womp. Philly Proud Boys leader Zach Rehl is on trial in Washington, D.C., in connection with the Jan. 6 incident that was most involved in the Capitol riots. But Rehl was a little vague on the details of what exactly he did that day.
Prosecutors on Tuesday released video that clearly shows Rel using pepper spray against law enforcement officers. (It's worth pointing out here that Rehl is the son and grandson of a Philly police officer.) But Rehl said he "doesn't recall" using pepper spray, which I assume was pepper-spraying members of enforcement.
