Interesting stories often appear in surprising or overlooked places. For example, the gift shop in Ipar Zahar. The structure is more than 100 years old, having been built for the first time in 1918. But there is more than age in its history! The original function of this building was a Waldensian chapel, called the "Chapel of St. Francis of Assisi".
The Waldensians are particularly prominent here in the North End, as they were Italian Protestants, whose population at the time completely outnumbered the Catholic neighborhood. The Valdesian sect actually predates the Reformation, the 12th century. It began in the 19th century in today's France and Italy.

They were named after Peter Waldo, who emphasized a simpler form of Christianity, strict adherence to the Bible, voluntary poverty, and a more decentralized structure of priesthood and worship. The Catholic Church soon accused them of heretical beliefs, and at various times they were almost exterminated over the centuries.

But they managed to survive, and eventually the Waldenses found a place within the larger Protestant Reformation. By the end of the 19th century, there were pockets of Valdenses in places like Italy and Switzerland, and, through immigration, as far away as Boston's North End.
As I mentioned, at this time the number of Protestants in the North was very small, and in fact, this is where the connection with the Old Church of the North begins. The Waldenses had no regular church of their own. In 1914, the rector of Old North, William Dewart, realized that Old North, as a Protestant congregation, had an opportunity to help these new immigrants to Boston.
Dewart offered the Waldenses the use of Old North on Sunday evenings, giving the community a regular place of worship in their neighborhood. The Old North also arranged for an Italian-speaking minister, Henry Sartorio, to conduct services in his first language. Services flourished and within a few years plans were being developed for the Waldenses to create their own place to call.

The North was very crowded at this time, with no place to build, but the Old North had a small yard. A "Mrs. William H. Lincoln of Brooklyn" offered to help pay for a chapel if the Old North would provide the land - the money was raised and the chapel was built.
On Thanksgiving Day 1918, the chapel of St. Francis of Assisi was dedicated. Bishop Dewart spoke at the ceremony symbolizing the connection between the two congregations, as well as the Bishop of Massachusetts, William Lawrence, who laid the foundation. At the dedication, Bishop Lawrence said the goal was not to convert North End Catholics.

but simply to help their Italian Protestant cousins find a common church of their own. And here is that building today. Over the years the chapel continued to serve a small but devoted congregation. Some of the original architectural elements of the building remain today.
The cross on the roof asserts the building's original function, as do the halo-like figures (perhaps angels or saints) carved into the columns, still visible after more than a century of wear and tear. The columns themselves are also original craftsmanship. The stone lion, a common symbol used in Christian aesthetics, is a favorite among many visitors (lions usually provide the best opportunity to present the building's history; their appeal tends to arouse great public curiosity).

And inside, the marble railings leading up to the stairs are original and would have originally led worshipers to their seats. Today, the railing offers a rare opportunity to literally touch a piece of history! So what is the transition from chapel to gift shop?
In 1929, a decade later, there were signs of change. Immigration restrictions in the United States and political unrest in Italy halted immigration from the homeland, so while the congregation remained stable during that time, it never grew. Over the next few decades, congregations began to gradually leave the North End for other less crowded neighborhoods or the suburbs, a historical example of the common story of immigrant culture over time.
With a small population to begin with, the combined outflow of Waldenses without further influx of new immigrants caused the parish to slowly evaporate. By the 1950s, the chapel was essentially no longer in use. But at the same time that the religious need diminished, the building became indispensable in a new way.

With growing interest in the history of the Old North and its connection to the American Revolution, workers here in the 1950s were in dire need of additional space to fully satisfy this demand as a historic site. Old North bought the building and turned it into a combination museum and retail space, only a gift shop years later.

In 1173, Waldo left his possessions to seek perfection through poverty. He and his followers were initially known as the "Poor of Lyon" and traveled and preached throughout the Lombardy region between present-day France and Italy. Waldo's following grew significantly and outside sources began to refer to him as "Waldens".
