Foreigners no longer require a travel permit (Surat Jalan) to enter Aceh, but an Indonesian visa is required. A 30-day visa is available at Banda Aceh Airport. The Kuala Lumpur embassy can sometimes process the visa on the same day if you complete all the documents by noon, although this only applies to Malaysian residents.
Non-stop night buses, travel time 9-13 hours - from Medan to Banda Aceh. Major bus companies such as PMTOH, Pelangi, Kurnia and Pusaka have offices on Jl. Yard: Mada, Medan. Prices range from Rp 110,000 in a regular size bus to Rp 200,000 in a wide bus.

The nearest major (international) ferry terminal is Belawan Port, near Medan. It receives ships from Batam, Indonesia (a common route when arriving from Singapore).

Ferries from Penang no longer operate. From Ulhi Lohi Port, Banda Aceh, you can go to Pulau Weh and Pulau Aceh. Bekak (motorcycle taxi) and labi-labi (public minibus) are the main modes of transportation. Due to the sudden influx of money after the tsunami, local people were used to overtime pay, but now stability has been restored.

Three fast food chain restaurants can be found in the center: A&W, KFC and Pizza Hut.

As with all travel, common sense and a good attitude will see you through this small town. But there are some things to keep in mind. Although Banda Aceh is safer than most European cities these days, it's best not to go out alone after 10pm.
Because Sharia law applies, drinking alcohol is not allowed, although it is possible. Violations of the locally accepted interpretation of sharia law can result in arrest by the sharia police, including corporal punishment and public ridicule of an offending Muslim. Muslim women are generally required to wear headscarves in public.
