The John Ball Zoo has been delighting Grand Rapids residents and visitors since 1891, when the small animals - known as "Ball 40" - began to be collected on land donated by John Ball, one of the city's founders.
The zoo has expanded by (antelope) leaps and (tiger) bounds since then, but still occupies its original location on the city's historic West Side. It is one of the most visited cultural attractions in Michigan. What can I see and do at John Ball Zoo?
See more than 2,000 animals representing more than 200 species in specially designed habitats and take part in a variety of exciting experiences, from zipline adventures to funicular rides. Great for kids - a place to see and learn about animals up close and be inspired to protect wildlife and the natural environment.
The 2023 season runs March 24-19. November. Summer opening hours are 9am-6pm. Opening hours vary from season to season, check website. Summer rates: $19 for adults (13-61) and $15 for seniors (62+), youth (3-12), students with ID, and active duty US military personnel and veterans and spouses with ID.
