About 150,000 people died in Banda Aceh in the December 26, 2004 Tsunami, leaving part of the city permanently under water. Many aid agencies have since stepped in to rebuild. The long-running conflict between the Aceh independence movement (GAM) and the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) was temporarily resolved by a peace agreement on August 15, 2005.
In 2006, the province held its first direct and democratic elections for regional leaders. In 2007, the first democratically elected governor, Irwandi Yusif, was sworn in. Banda Aceh has a tropical rainforest climate, with an almost constant average temperature. The average temperature of the city is 27 °C.
However, the city experiences wet and dry seasons, with June to August being the driest months of the year. Banda Aceh does not have a real dry season month with an average rainfall of less than 60 mm. The city receives less than 2000 mm of rain annually.
By Bus[Edit]
There is no longer a travel permit (Surat Jalan) for foreigners to enter Aceh, but an Indonesian visa is required. It is possible to obtain a 30-day visa on arrival at Banda Aceh Airport. Embassies in Kuala Lumpur can sometimes issue visas on the same day if you complete all the paperwork before noon, although this only applies to Malaysian citizens.

There are non-stop night buses, which run between 9-13 hours - from Medan to Banda Aceh. Major bus companies such as PMTOH, Pelangi, Kurnia and Pusaka on Jl. Gajah Mada, Medan. Prices range from IDR 110,000 for a regular bus to IDR 200,000 for an extended bus.
Minibuses can also take you from the Medan area to Banda Aceh, but the journey is usually longer. Prices are slightly cheaper than buses. It is also possible to go from Medan to Banda Aceh via Kutacane and Takengon. This will be a total of 20 hours.
The airline flies daily between Banda Aceh and Medan, 1 hour journey, Jakarta, 2 hours and 40 minutes journey, or Singapore, almost 4 hours. Buses no longer serve the airport. The only way to get to the city area is by airport taxi at a rate of IDR 100,000 (2019).
By Bus[Edit]
After exiting the entrance gate, the taxi counter is on the left. Visa procedures at this airport are similar to other Indonesian immigration gates. The nearest major (international) ferry terminal is Belawan Belawan, which is near Medan. Take the ferry from Batam, Indonesia (a common route when coming from Singapore).
The ferry from Penang no longer operates. From Ulhee-lhee, Banda Aceh port you can go to Pulau Weh and on Pulau Aceh. The main modes of transportation are becak (motorcycle taxis) and labi-labi (public minibuses). Due to the sudden influx of money after the tsunami, local people used to spend more money, but now calm has returned.

At the peak of the post-tsunami relief effort there were 850 NGOs, but many were non-Muslim religious organizations and their licenses were not renewed by the Indonesian government. In the center of the city there is an interesting fish, meat and vegetable market.
There are also a few small gift shops selling local items. Hermes Palace Mall is located in the center of Banda Aceh city. The mall has over 100 stores including a food court, supermarket and clothing stores. Acehnese breakfast staple is milk nasi, rice cooked in coconut milk, sold in cafes everywhere.
Food stalls and restaurants in Padang are open all over the city, and fruit baskets are everywhere. Around Jl Tengku Iskander on the western outskirts of town, there are some good cafes with peaceful views of the rice fields around Ulee Kareng. Three fast food chain restaurants can be found in the mall, A&W, KFC and Pizza Hut.

Like all travelers common sense and a good attitude is all you need to get by in this small town. However there are some points to consider. Although Banda Aceh is currently safer than most European cities, it is best not to go out alone after 10pm.

As Sharia law is enforced, the consumption of alcohol is prohibited, although still possible. Violation of local interpretations of Sharia law can result in arrest by Sharia police with corporal punishment and public ridicule of a Muslim who violates it. Muslim women are generally required to wear the headscarf in public.
