Here are my tried and tested tips for giving a close friend or family member an unexpected travel gift. If you cannot be 100% sure that the recipient of the gift will enjoy the trip and will be available to travel on the specified dates (with a valid passport, COVID-19 requirements, etc.), you may not want to book.

The easiest way to foil your secret plan is to have the itinerary appear in the recipient's email inbox or frequent flyer account.
This almost always happens if you use their frequent flyer or hotel loyalty numbers in the booking process. This may seem like an easy step to skip, but know that it can happen automatically if you've already booked a trip with them and have their flight numbers always saved in your account.

For example, one year I booked trips for both my mom and husband for Christmas, and they were both already travelers in my United Mileage Plus account. I had to enter them as new people so that their regular numbers wouldn't go into the sorted area.

Booking through a third-party site, such as Expedia, and leaving frequent flyer numbers can also work.
