He had made mistakes and was ashamed and could not forgive himself for the pain he had caused his family. He wasn't feeling well and he felt like he didn't belong here anymore. He could not love himself, so he could not accept the gift of love he gave her.
He was looking for something to hold onto..to keep him alive. Every time she looked in the mirror, she was so ashamed of the lie she was living. He drank to try to hide the pain, but it was too much to bear. This song helped me understand how he felt and the pain he felt every day.
This song was played at his funeral. It was an explanation for the pain he felt. and that was his greeting to us. Is it possible that this song is about life? Perhaps the gift represents life and the song is directed to God or a higher power you believe.

Seether's 'The Gift' is exactly what the title promises. That in itself makes it an instant classic. Everyone is entitled to their own interpretation of any song. Thank you for being able to empathize and feel that it was written just for me, even though I don't know.
