At first, Joseph Sr. was reluctant to share, but eventually he gave in to his neighbor's request and told him about Joseph Jr.'s experiences. Oliver needs to know if such incredible things are true.
He prayed. Peace came over him and convinced him that God had spoken and confirmed the stories he had heard. He told no one of this experience, although he often spoke of the gold plates and gradually came to believe that God was calling him.

Despite this failure, Joseph reassured his mother and told her that an angel had told him that God would send him a scribe. "And I believe his promise will be fulfilled," said Joseph. 3 In fact, God sent a scribe, and to the surprise of Joseph's mother and father, Oliver Cowdery was the man they helped prepare.
Oliver arrived at the home of Joseph and Emma Smith on April 5, 1829. Joseph and Oliver wasted little time. After they were on some business on April 6, they started translating together. The translation continued for several days, and then Joseph received a revelation for his new scribe.
Oliver's lingering doubts about Joseph Smith's prophetic gift came as words of revelation that Oliver did not share with anyone. God reminded him, "Think of the night when you cried out to me in your heart to know the truth about these things." “Have I not comforted you in this matter?—What greater testimony can you have from God?
..Doubt not, fear not.”4 Oliver came to Harmony believing he was called to write to Joseph. Now he was there and he wanted to know what else God had in store for him. God said in Revelation, "Behold, you have a gift, and you are blessed because of your gift."

one gift: "If thou wilt, I will translate even as my servant Joseph." Meanwhile, Oliver continued to see Joseph Smith use his gift of translation. That same month, the two discussed the fate of John the Apostle—a hot topic in time. Joseph's chronicle records that they differed in their opinions and that they "agreed together to settle [it] with the Urim and the Shemim."6 The answer was in the vision of the scroll that Joseph translated, which is now the Doctrine and Covenants 7 .

As Joseph and Oliver continued their work, Oliver became eager to play a greater role in the translation. God had promised him the opportunity to translate, and he wanted to claim it. Joseph dictated another revelation. In it, God assured Oliver that he could to receive the gift he desires It required faith and an honest heart.
The discovery further informed the future translator how the process works. God declared, "I will tell you in your mind and in your heart the Holy Spirit who will come upon you and dwell in your heart." Revelation always came here. Revelation declared that it was the vehicle or "spirit by which Moses brought the children of Israel out of the Red Sea on dry land."
God Never Does Anything Without A Purpose
Oliver Cowdery lived in a culture steeped in biblical ideas, language and customs. Revelation's reference to Moses probably resonated with him. The Old Testament account of Moses and his brother Aaron gives several examples of the rod being used to reveal God's will (see Exodus 7:9-12; Numbers 17:8).
Many Christians in the time of Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery similarly believed in the divining rod as a means of revelation. Oliver was among those who believed in the divining rod and used it. God recognized Oliver's ability to use a staff: "You have another gift, which is the gift of working with a bud [or staff]."
Confirming the divinity of this gift, Revelation declared: "Behold, there is no other power than God that can accomplish this thing of nature in your hands, for it is the work of God." (9) If Oliver had wanted it, the discovery would have continued. In other words, God added the gift of translation to the gifts of revelation that Oliver already possessed.

Although we know very few details about Oliver Cowdery's attempted translation, it apparently did not go well. His efforts quickly proved futile. After Oliver's defeat, Joseph Smith received another revelation and advised Oliver, "Be patient, my son, for this wisdom is in me, and it is not expedient for you to translate at this time."

Oliver was also told he didn't understand the process. "You must study it in your mind," he was told. "So you have to ask me if it's true, and if it is, I'll make your chest burn inside of you." Discouraged by his failed attempt at translation, Oliver dutifully continued his role as scribe, with Joseph dictating the translation from the pages.
Those were days never to be forgotten," Oliver later wrote. "[Sitting] under the voice dictated by heavenly inspiration caused the greatest gratitude of this embrace." When Joseph and Oliver came to the account of Jesus' personal ministry to the Nephites, they began to wonder if anyone in their day had the authority to govern Christ's true church.
They were especially concerned about baptism. On May 15, 1829, they left the Smith House where they worked to find a secluded place to pray in a nearby wooded area. Whatever doubts Oliver Cowdery still had must have disappeared when the resurrected John the Baptist "descended in a cloud of light and laid hands on us [saying] to you, my servants, in the name of Christ I give the priesthood."
Aaron, who holds the keys of the ministering angel and the gospel of repentance and baptism by immersion for the remission of sins.”12 This experience strengthened Oliver's faith. "Where was the doubt?" Oliver later wrote about the incident.
