Over the years, we have engaged food experts and officials to evaluate 36 brands of chocolate in taste tests. And we find Recchiuti's flavors, craftsmanship and packaging exquisite – and, for the right occasion, perhaps not even a little glamorous. To cater for people with different tastes, we offer a variety of choices including fancy little flavor bombs, dessert-making chocolates, single-origin ganache and a nut-free vegan range.
With perfectly executed flavors and an impressive range of shapes and textures, Recchiuti Black Box Chocolates were our tasters' top choice, beating out a number of boutique chocolates from the new and old world. This Valentine themed box has the same assortment as the Black Box.

The only difference is the packaging. Who's it for: Adventurous chocoholics and traditionalists—who will appreciate creative riffs on classic chocolate choices. Why they're great: Unlike many chocolate boxes we've tried, Recchiuti Confections' 16-piece Black Box offers a full sensory experience—which is part of the reason for boxed chocolate in the first place.

Every part is memorable. Classic blends like burnt caramel and Piedmont hazelnut offer just the right balance of sweet and bitter. Adventurous flavors like tarragon grapefruit or star anise and pink pepper are never overpowering (a problem we've had with most other flavored chocolates). One of our favorites, the sesame nougat, has the perfect texture of chewy caramel, a light crunch from toasted sesame seeds, and the feel of perfectly tempered dark chocolate.
We found the chocolate to be of high quality, with delicate, long-lasting flavors that come from great cocoa. The candies aren't very sweet either. It has just enough sugar to balance the taste. Of all the chocolates we tested, Recchiuti candies come in the most interesting shapes and designs.
No two chocolates are alike. Some have intricate patterns, while others look like small sculptures. As they say, you eat with your eyes first, and visual variety adds excitement to the experience. On top of that, Recchiuti's packaging—a matte black box that's sexy without being overbearing or overbearing—is one of the sleekest we've come across in our tests.

If you don't like this box, Recchiuti sometimes offers seasonal versions with different packaging. For Valentine's Day 2023, there's a Love & Truffles box, which is silver with a red ribbon.) The Recchiuti box has a minimalist design that explains the flavors. Booklet included. , with black and white photos of each chocolate.
We found this to be much easier to decipher than many other brands of keys. The Recchiuti Black Box has become a popular gift among our colleagues since we first recommended it in 2014. Wirecutter's Annam Swanson told us, “I bought a black box for Christmas for my boyfriend... and wow, were we impressed.

Gorgeous packaging... and each chocolate was delicious and unique. Editor-in-Chief Ben Froomin said that when he ordered a box for his wife, "she unequivocally declared it the best and most stylish chocolate she'd ever had." Although some of the chocolates were damaged in shipping, Frumin said Recuti's customer service refunded them and they were generally a pleasure to work with.
Not a drawback, but not a hindrance: Some of the chocolates in this box come in very specific flavor combinations (more of a warning than a drawback). While we don't think anyone will be offended, it might be a bit "out there" for some. (This palate may be more satisfied with the more classic flavors of the Valerie Baby Grand range.) Shipping: Recchiuti ships via FedEx in the US.
Classic Chocolates With A Twist
Shipping costs range from $14 for Standard to $30 for Priority Overnight. Although you will find Recchiuti chocolates in some individual stores (mostly in California), the website has the best selection. Valerie Confections' Toffees, Caramel and Truffles are deceptively simple, with a classic filling and some unexpected flavor combinations combined with beautiful technique.
Who's it for: Dessert lovers who enjoy the delicious, buttery goodness of a classic caramel or liquid caramel filling. Why they're great: Tasting the chocolates of Los Angeles-based Valerie Confections is a masterclass in simplicity. They look simple—a palette of bittersweet chocolate coatings, some hand-dipped, others molded, placed in dark brown candy cups.
Different shapes or additional toppings—such as whole almonds or flaky sea salt—set them apart. Compared to some of the psychedelic swirled chocolates we've tried, like Melissa Koppel or Kate Weiser, this feels pretty tame. And their performance leaves little to hide. This 18-piece box is a great assortment for lovers of the classics - such as deeply delicious almond toffee, buttery caramel candies and smooth, dark truffles with a 72% chocolate and Scotch ganache filling.

These chocolates are also sophisticated enough to appeal to anyone who appreciates a beautifully crafted dessert. What makes them so impressive - especially compared to other, more traditional varieties we've tried - is just how the technique is chosen: from the flawless, satin finishes of dipped chocolate to the sharp snap of caramel (which offers an epiphany. the candies should

to be ). Besides more textbook flavors, there are also surprises. Toffee was seasoned with fresh mint, an unexpected combination that delighted tasters. Truffle and black pepper ganache with a sprinkle of cracked pepper on top ignited our palates. The presentation—a beautiful cream-colored box with gold lettering and gold satin ribbon—is as elegant as the contents.
The box looks special, almost as if it could contain silk underwear or jewelry, and would be perfect for almost any type of gift, whether personal or professional. Downsides, but not detractors: Our main complaint about this assortment is that there is no legend to indicate the filling of each chocolate (this information is not even listed online).
Some people don't mind the guesswork, but it can be a problem for those with allergies or dietary restrictions. Shipping: Prices range from $16.95 to $34.95 for standard shipping for express delivery to some locations; Overnight options range from $49.95 to $59.95. Melissa Koppel's marble candies and hand-dipped chocolates are impressively well-crafted, with layered fillings that remind us of a tanned dessert.
Who it's for: Those who appreciate a beautiful dessert and are mesmerized by a mesmerizingly gorgeous presentation. Why they're great: Chocolates that have a edgy Technicolor look are a dime a dozen these days. Often style trumps substance, as we experienced when we tried Fave and Kate Weiser chocolates.
