– Exit through the Gift Shop, a thought-provoking documentary produced by the Sundance Film Festival, shows how Thierry Guetta became an artist overnight; How does it become a brand? I find many similarities between Thierry as the owner of a vintage clothing store and Thierry as Mr. Brainwash.
He buys clothes at a low price, labels them and sells them to his customers at a high price. Customers buy clothes just because of the name they wear. Similarly, people appreciate and accept his art only because of the brand, not because of its depth.
This can be related to advertising culture. Even when people see products, they are forced to buy what advertisers offer. Because of the culture built into them; A culture of buying products for their name, not their value. This documentary is a powerful portrait of hegemony and counter-hegemony in our society.

Trying to follow in Banksy's footsteps, Thierry represents a hegemonic culture. Banksy tried to influence non-artists to love art, and Thierry is just one example. Many other people stop and look at Banksy graffiti, accepting graffiti as part of their culture. What Banksy did was make people in his city aware of graffiti, and they eventually came to appreciate it;

It remained an accepted culture, but not a practical one. Even those who don't like art are starting to see graffiti as a form of creative art because the only way to survive in the culture industry is to adapt.
Thierry has fallen in love with the graffiti culture and describes himself as a huge Banksy fan and someone Banksy admires. He presents himself as an ordinary man who fell in love with this art form, thus "opposing" the culture promoted by Banksy. Thierry makes people feel like a graffiti artist;
you don't need to "know" art. People who initially thought that graffiti was created only by the disobedient, began to imagine that everyone could participate in this art form. Thierry became a brand so quickly that his success or failure did not even consume him.

He sold out overnight to those who thought he was among them; a person who will do anything for love. However, upon closer inspection, Thierry does not seem to know where he is going or what he is doing. From selling clothes in a boutique, he became a very popular graffiti artist.
Apparently not as artistic as Bansky or as thoughtful as Space Invader. However, in a short time it became very popular. How can? First of all, street art culture is shaped in people's minds as a symbol of protest and power. People thought of graffiti artists as strong people who speak out about what they think is wrong.

In the public eye, street performers were more secretive because many of them did not reveal their identities like Bansky. Thierry used the cultural phenomenon of graffiti and the public's perception of street performers as enigmatic to reveal his identity to them. Bansky's distrust of Thierry's art was shown by the media and people bought it.
The mass media created the idea that if there is someone in society who threatens the famous Banski through his art, then this person must be of some importance. This also applies to the first paragraph, and as I mentioned, people buy something because of the name, not the price.

The population that buys into this idea is filtered through the current culture and stigmatized by the seller, which is the mass media here.
Thierry himself did not become a brand. Despite all his efforts to attract public attention, it was Bansky and the media that made Thierry a name. These Banksy comments got people thinking. Thinking about it, it seems that Banksy was actually part of the whole counter-hegemonic movement that Thierry activated, intentionally or accidentally.
From what I've seen, Banksy knew from the start that Thierry wouldn't do well as an artist, but nonetheless made him the key to changing the current cultural hegemony by focusing on graffiti as a whole as an art form. Simply put, Thierry was part of an extravagant show, but without a script.

Throughout the process, Thierry didn't know he was becoming a brand/image, and the public didn't realize that they were all players in an act of hegemony against hegemony. This leads us to believe that while Thierry thought he was a self-made brand, he did not understand all the external factors that made him a brand.

These are cultures where external factors are embedded in society. It also gives us an indication that anyone can be a brand if they want to because in this world we all have to admire someone and it doesn't matter who it is. It is not clear whether this strange idea is culture or whether culture is what we believe in.

A 2010 documentary directed by Street-Art is the amazing Banksy that follows the life of a strange Frenchman named Thierry Guetta who admires street art and videotapes his surroundings daily. Thierry gets to know what it's like to be a street artist for the first time by filming a mysterious man named Banksy and accompanying him day and night on his adventures, spreading his tagged artwork around Los Angeles.
Later, Banksy decided to open an art gallery showcasing his work, which was a huge success. Thierry is then inspired by the success of the shows so he decides to become a street performer like Banksy so he becomes "Mr. Brainwashed". To everyone's surprise, Thierry's own art show won and brought him fame in the art world. After watching this documentary, I began to appreciate the characteristics of street art and see it as a movement. After watching the documentary, I learned more about the value of street art.
