Keeping It Corny Since 1892
Mascot Cornelius outside the Cornelius Palace, shortly before its renovation in 2015. The Mitchell Cornelius Palace was not built from corn, and royalty never lived there. But it is a regal example of American folk art, and the only survivor of the 21st century from the 19th century to decorate buildings with everything from alfalfa to oats.

One of the 375,000 ears of corn that the Palace had was put in its place. Farmhouses once dotted the American heartland. Farm villages covered the buildings and harvested them as a showcase for the fertility of the soil, arranging the plants in geometric patterns and patriotic designs.
They were trying to get people to move here," said Troy Magnuson, director of the Corn Palace's gift shop (and its resident historian). Prospective farmers would see a palace with its exotic style and agricultural wealth, and decided that the border town was a good place to settle.
There was a Sugar Beet Palace in Grand Island, Nebraska; Sorghum Palace in Arcola, Illinois; and many others. The biggest of these early technological marvels was the Cup Palace in Sioux City, Iowa — but when that city was plagued by floods and financial panic, Mitchell "took the idea and ran with it," Troy said.

Mitchell built his first Horn Palace in 1892, then replaced it in 1905. The current Palace, the last of its kind, opened in 1921. Onion domes and castle turrets on top were added in 1937, then upgraded to a sleeker, LED- enhanced. towers in 2015. Through all its iterations, pennants and flags are flown from several poles on the roof.

classics". Later postcards praise them highly, extolling "the architecture of the ear of corn, wheat and corn." The Cup Palace was built mainly of brick and concrete, with large vertical sections of wood that can be filled with culture art, and it was changed every year.
Usually it is easy to date the Palace in old photos - but a wet spring, dry summer, or the beginning of winter can delay the harvest and drag the finish of the grain mural well into the following year. "We are at the mercy of Mother Nature," Troy said.

The art is not made of a single kernel of corn, but of mountains divided along its length, which creates a flat side that is nailed to the building (the Corn Palace goes through more than a ton of nails every year ). About 325,000 ears of corn are used, arranged in predefined patterns in a "corn by number" process, in many shades of red, brown, black, blue, green, white and yellow.
People think the grain is painted," Troy said, "but the colors are all natural." The darker varieties are flint grain, which Troia described as "one of the hardest substances known to mankind." This prevents birds and squirrels from eating the art.
