We started raising bison in December 1988, but what started as a four animal hobby has grown to meet the demands of today's more "health conscious" consumer. Our bison are handled as little as possible. They spend their lives in the grass as usual and spend very little time in the feeding area.
They are not exposed to questionable drugs, chemicals or hormones. The herd is often seen on Route 30. We are 2 miles west of Schellsburg. Our gift shop is located on the south side of Highway 30. Bison fields are across the road. There are spots along the way if you want to take photos, but stay outside the fence.
Bison are very strong animals and can seriously injure you if you walk inside a fence. Stay behind the fence for your own safety! We welcome visitors during our gift shop opening hours. The times are listed below. Open daily April through December Monday-Saturday 10-5 Sundays 12-5 Winter Hours: Thursday-Saturday 10-5 Sundays 12-5 Bison or Buffalo ... which is right?
The American bison is not related to the Asian water buffalo or the wild Cape buffalo of Africa...and only distantly related to the European buffalo called the "sage". But early settlers called the American bison "buffalo" and the name stuck. In current usage, the words "buffalo" and "bison" are used interchangeably, but this is incorrect.
A bit of bison history. Bison played an important role in keeping the Plains Indians alive by providing them with food, clothing, shelter, and much of their culture. Later in American history, bison helped feed and sustain westward explorers and settlers. Wild bison, nearly extinct in the late 19th century, are enjoying a comeback.

More than 80,000 bison live in public and private herds on the North American continent. Speed and Agility Although bison may look fat and lazy, they can actually run up to 35 mph - three times faster than a human. They can outrun most horses and turn on their front legs with their hind legs, which allows them to pick up a piece!
Despite their docile appearance, bison are very unpredictable animals and have been known to attack people and vehicles without warning. How big is a bison? An adult male weighs about 2,000 pounds, a female about 1,200 pounds. Whole herds of these giants roaming the area covered huge tracks in the ground during migration.
IDPs called these paths "tracks". Sometimes they made convenient wagon roads. Many of our modern highways follow the path of the bison trail. Behavior You may notice large, worn patches on the ground, polished rocks, and worn trees in areas where bison roam. These are the "fluffs," places where the bison get a good roll or give themselves a good scratch as they shed their winter coats.
Because of its size, this kind of behavior can actually be quite destructive in the landscape. Horns Bison horns, unlike deer and elk, are made of a hair-like substance. Unlike antlers, antlers grow slowly and are permanent. They are bred in annual "rings" that indicate the age of the animal.
The taste of Bison tastes great! Most of those polled think bison is the spiciest meat they've ever tasted, with a sweeter and fuller flavor than beef. Bison is naturally flavorful and tender and can be cooked like beef. Bison belongs to the gourmet or specialty meat category at your supermarket or meat market.
