Since 1829, the Yuengling family has been brewing beer in Pottsville, Schuylkill County, earning Yuengling the title of "America's Oldest Brewery"! Best of all, you can take a free hour-long tour of this historic and still-operating brewery in Pottsville, and get some free beer samples at the end of the tour!
Exploring The Yuengling Museum
You can find the latest information on tour rules and opening hours on Yuuengling's official website, but I'll give you a snapshot of what you can see, hear, smell and taste. Yuengling Brewery! Your tour of the company's historic brewery begins in the equally historic Yuengling Dairy Building, built in 1920 during Prohibition (which lasted from 1919 to 1933).

The building, now home to the Yongling Museum, gift shop and tasting room (where the tour ends), was once used to produce products such as Yongling Ice Cream. The museum is located at 420 Mahantongo St., Pottsville, PA 17901 and has free parking in the large gravel lot behind the dairy building, as well as on- and off-street metered parking when space is full.
On the next tour, I registered for a spot at the gift shop counter, then explored the museum while I waited for the tour to begin. There I found a lot of information about Yuengling Brewery's founding family, as well as Yuengling promotional bottles, cans, labels and memorabilia.
The gift shop adjacent to the museum has anything and everything a Yongling enthusiast could want! When I was informed that my tour was about to begin, I returned to the square near the dairy entrance and our tour guide took us across the street to the historic red brick Yuuengling Brewery.
Exploring The Yuengling Brewery
We entered the brewery at street level and were immediately surrounded by the aroma of Yuengling beer. Descending the stairs, we entered the underground “beer caves” – hand-dug tunnels where the beer was then aged before being mechanically chilled. The tunnels are cool (but not too cold), so if you get cold easily, you may want to bring a light jacket or hoodie for this part of the hike.
Another interesting underground feature was the Rathskeller brewery, a generic German term for a pit under the street. Built in 1936, before OSHA allowed drinking on the job, our tour guide told us, it was once a break room for Rathskeller's Brewery! We went through more passages under the brewery and saw where the raw materials for brewing are stored.

Finally we arrive at the more modern part of the brewery, where the Yuuengling Lager is bottled. Our last stop was across the street in the dairy building at the tasting room, where guests 21 and older were treated to two free samples of Yuengling products, including some sweet beer if you prefer something non-alcoholic.
An interesting feature of the dairy building is the smokehouse made of Yuuengling bottles. If you love DIY projects as much as you love DIY projects, this deserves a spot on your "I need to try this" list! Overall, I found the whole experience of visiting the unique pub to be very interesting and everyone working there was friendly and accommodating.
Final Thoughts On Touring The Yuengling Brewery
Free admission, free beer and a free history lesson at one of Pennsylvania's oldest and most successful breweries - what's not to love about a cool beer tour in Pottsville?! Although not part of the official tour, you will see the 1913 Enuengling mansion on several sections of Mahantungo Avenue.
The house was built by Frank Yongling, the third generation of Yonglings to run the brewery in Pottsville. Yongling Castle was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. The Tudor-style mansion is located at 1440 Mahantongo Ave., Pottsville, PA, 17901. It is now used as the headquarters of the Schuylkill County Arts Council.
He attended Fighter's Paradise, nicknamed Muhammad Ali, at a training camp in rural Pennsylvania, six miles south of Enguengling Brewery near Dan Lake. Ali took part in some of the biggest fights of his career, including Scream in the Jungle and Trilla in Manila at his gym in Schuylkill County, and today Fighter's Paradise has been lovingly restored and is open for public tours.

Jerry's Museum of Classic Cars and Collectibles in Pottsville is a two-story, floor-to-ceiling collection of classic cars and pop culture memorabilia housed in a historic garage. Located just a few blocks from the Jeruengling Brewery, the Jerry's Museum is a fun and varied way to spend a few hours while visiting Pottsville.
