Recipients, including some in Northern Illinois, said they received cards from someone calling themselves "Jenny B" congratulating them on their pregnancies, the BBB said in a report.

Sometimes, women who receive the cards are not pregnant. The cards being sent contain gift cards for women-related products, the BBB said. In some cases, coupons are bundled with gift cards, both linked to Pleasant Grove, Utah-based Mother's Day LLC, the BBB said. A woman named Elizabeth from the DeKalb County area of Genoa called the BBB to report what she believed to be a scam.

She received a card that included gift cards and coupons late last month and saw a $245 charge, the BBB reported. Elizabeth is not pregnant and does not know how or why she got on the mailing list, BBB said. Gift cards are issued by a company for its online business, according to the BBB.

The BBB chapters serving Northern Nevada and Utah have acquired 15 partner businesses - including Mindful Gift Cards and Canopy Couture. Gift cards are issued in the U.S. and Canada in envelopes that appear to have no return labels, when they had no return labels in the first place, the BBB said.

BBB said it was a commercial when the envelope looked like a letter from a friend. "There have been complaints in the past from BBB customers that adding a gift card to their order will increase the cost of shipping. This increase appears to cost more of the gift card," said Steve Bernas.
