After a 4-2 loss to the Lightning, we're back to a scenario no Leafs fan wants: a packed, electric Amalie Arena with a loaded Lightning team still fighting to continue their season. This game had many similarities with the previous two games. The neutral zone was always a challenging area for the Leafs and they had to settle for long passes and dump-ins to conquer the zone rather than carry it.
It felt like the Leafs were about to stage another comeback after Matthews made it 4-2 with 3:34 (very fitting) left in the third period. He managed to get hold of an open spot on the side of the net with the extra attacker and buried it.
Business Description
He finished the game with three shots on target, but some of his best looks just fell short. His takeout skill really stood out in the second period behind the Lightning net. He brought more into the game than his first assist of the first period.
Knies is a straightforward workhorse. He plays along the boards to relieve the pressure in the defense zone and uses all his energy to make sure he's in the right place in defence. Knies wants the puck and is willing to put all his energy into getting it back, as well as taking others out of the game.

Rielly takes more risks with his wrist shot through traffic, but at the time it was a one-on-one fight between him and Vasilevskiy. He also did well defending the empty net late in the third inning.

Great first period power play deflection and a particularly strong play, winning pucks from Tampa players and winning loose pucks in a crowd.
McCabe was a heavy hitter in this one, making big hits off Brandon Hagel, Brayden Point and Ross Colton. He also created three offensive scoring opportunities for the Leafs on another penalty kill that diminished the momentum the Lightning was trying to create.

I felt like Marner held the puck a little too long. It's his game and he has the skill and vision to turn it into actions, but those extra seconds of watching him take the puck down or knock it off negates everything he was trying to get going.

Marner also had an early chance to tie the game, but missed a breakaway. He had several big moments that broke the Lightning's cover. One of Vasilevskiy's best saves came late in the third period when he got a chunk of Nylander's shot with his blocker after being skated by three Tampa players.
His stealing the puck in the neutral zone in the first period on the power play was one of the few times the Leafs took back half the ice. It also led to two chances for Calle Järnkrok. Chance of back-to-back with high risk in the same round.
He also had another shot off the bench with speed into the wall. The streak leader added nine more to his tally. He got the ball rolling early on blocked shots, got stuck and left the firing range. Finishing controls work solid and prevent body positioning, even combining those moments that block shots in the process.
