A receipt is attached, making it even more real, and it lists gift cards from a website called “Thoughtful Gift Cards. The gift cards look real and are clearly a credit to online stores like Little Wanderers, Pregnancy Pillow, Custom Snappies, Udder Covers and Canopy Couture.
NewsChannel 9's Andrew Donovan took one of the gift cards and tried to buy $30 baby shoes from LittleWanderers.com. With $30 credit left, the website still asked for credit card information to cover the $18 shipping fee. While the scheme isn't necessarily illegal and the online stores sell real products, research shows that the company makes its money by offering credit but charges more for shipping, which the gift cards don't cover.
The same conclusion is consistent with the Better Business Bureau's complaints from consumers who paid more for shipping than if they hadn't used gift cards. All of the businesses listed on the gift cards are operated by Mothers Lounge, which did not respond to NewsChannel 9's request for comment.
