I was probably 13 or 14 when this conversation happened. I was just starting to like boys and probably wanted to get something nice for a boy I liked, so head over heels.

I trusted her, why not me? Mothers are known for their advice. They give us the most important advice to protect us, especially from the mistakes they made. Considering his advice, I accepted that it would be terrible to see a man walk out of my life wearing the shoes I had gifted him.
Strange foreshadowing but something similar happened 23 years later. It would be the Bose radio, not the shoes, that I gave my ex-husband, stuffed with his other stuff, after I decided it was time for him to leave. You are right, I wanted to recover this Bose radio!!
I can't even imagine it being a pair of shoes. I probably would have pinned him to the floor and forced him off. There are many superstitions that we grow up with. I recently did a survey and asked how many people add money when they gift someone a wallet.

At one point it was a tie. Most people have never heard of such a thing. Add money? Did I just fill the wallet?!?! However, some like me believe that it brings good luck to the recipient. You send positive wishes that their wallet will never be empty.

Personally, I keep money in wallets I no longer use. I'm not talking hundreds of dollars, but a quarter or at best a dollar would be enough. When the hostess is asked how many people bring gifts when invited to a meeting. 71% said yes, while 29% said no.
Again, this goes back to mom for me. "Never come to a party empty-handed," she said. My choice is a bottle of wine - (usually my favorite brand unless I know the host family's favorite). You can't go wrong with a bottle of wine unless the hostess or her partner is drinking (always good to check) If they are, dessert is always a winner!
Another old but sweet one we were told when we were kids, celebrating your birthday before your actual birthday is bad luck if you die before it arrives. It took me years to come to terms with this. I mean, if I had celebrated my birthday before it happened and died before my actual birthday, I would have at least celebrated!!

But in all fairness, I always celebrate my birthday, and my children's, though not always on or after the birthday. I am not one to tempt fate. Besides, mother talked a lot. Another is "don't buy or assemble a crib before the baby is born."
why mom for what His response is "if the baby doesn't happen". oh god!! It sounds very unfortunate and imminent death. But yeah, we never bought or put together cribs until the three kids and mine were born. I think this superstition is meant to help in times of trouble and help ease the trauma of removing everything from the baby.

You may be wondering what year my mother was born? 1800? Infant mortality rates have improved significantly, so is it worth buying a crib? I mean, what other great baby product can our colleagues buy and sell? No, I think it's a cultural thing. I've heard it raised - don't give a man a watch or your time is up (in a relationship). I mean, I gave an ex a watch and kicked the superstition - luckily! Also, don't give a knife as a gift because it will break the relationship.
