I wanted a vegan backpack and I found a rather crudely made bag with these unique designs. I brought the bag home and people in America stop me on the street and tell me how much they love my bag. I again traveled to Sumatra while working on a documentary series on naturopathy and healing.
One day I stumbled upon the embroidered pattern that you now see again on bandana bags. I really needed to know where they came from, so I traveled the country and met the women who create such unique designs. These were wonderful craftsmen who created quirky and unique hand embroidered designs and I was impressed by their craftsmanship.
I knew immediately that I had to start a collaboration with these women who were creating these designs like magic. My search for these magical and unique designs led me to a village in the Banda Aceh region of Sumatra. If you have been following the news for the past fifteen years, you would remember that this is the place where the world's deadliest tsunami has been recorded.

Traveling Sumatra, Running Into A Unique Design
The earthquake that shook the region literally toppled the Earth off its axis. The tsunami that followed devastated the region, killing over two million people. I came after that disaster, and it was a decade later. Looking around I see this happened just a week ago.
I can't believe these gorgeous embroidery patterns were born here. One day a thought struck me that I can bring these unique designs to the world and help these women who are stuck in a situation that hasn't gotten better over the years. This remote region had little opportunity to revive its economy, but they had something I knew the world would appreciate.
We collaborated to design a vegan and cruelty-free bag that can grace both the runway and the checkout line. The weekend bag was born. Shortly after designing the Weekend, we developed the Nano. This is one vegan leather handbag that really makes a statement. Then we designed a vegan backpack that anyone can carry.
The Vegan Backpack is beautiful and the perfect size to carry all your essentials. Shell bag is a unique design that we have come up with because we had never seen anything like this. Still nothing to compare. Our vegan wallets take on familiar shapes, but the designs are all bandana.

We're constantly tinkering and playing with new ideas, and we aim to be one of the most innovative vegan fashion and cruelty-free handbag companies on the planet. Banda bags have helped improve the economic opportunities of people badly affected by the tsunami. When I started Bandana Bags, I made it the foundation of the company to pay fair wages and ensure the safety and well-being of the artisans.

We're talking about ingredients from all-natural sources, including pineapple. We are also looking into ways to make thread out of plastic from the ocean! I was right in assuming that people would love the unique designs found in Indonesia. A lot has happened since those early days of working with craftsmen in their remote village.
