We made our choice and went to the register to pay. We didn't notice, but the gift card expired last month. The cashier kindly declined our gift card, we paid, and ate our bagels. It was a great morning otherwise. But I can't help but reflect on the negative experience with the gift card.
Two things bother me about expired gift cards: 1. Customers are not rewarded for being "incentivized". We went to the store in part because we thought we were going to save money and gift cards. We didn't notice the fine print of the expiration date.

Maybe 5% of people have a card? I bet 75% of gift card recipients use it before it expires, and the other 5% try to use it after.

The other 20% didn't think about it, missed it, or never used it for any reason. So this company is risking a negative customer experience so they can save 5% of their gift card budget? It doesn't make sense to me. With the signing of the Gift Card Act, the laws regarding gift cards are changing.
These gift card regulations have been in use for the past few years. The expiration date and costs associated with gift cards bother them. Key provisions of the law: The card we received (in the story above) was clearly given before this was implemented. It will be interesting to see how retailers and banks deal with gift cards in the coming months and years.
I suspect they and their customers will be much happier. The holiday shopping season is upon us. Many consumers will soon go to the store to find the best deal on the item they want or the item they want to give to someone. "Stuff" has a place in this season of giving, but gift cards are one of my favorite things to give and receive in most cases.
