Published in the New York Sunday World in 1905, O. Henry's short story The Gift of the Magi, later collected in The Four Million (1906). The story concerns James and Della Dillingham Young, a young couple who, despite their poverty, individually decide to give each other a beautiful gift on Christmas Eve.
Della sells her beautiful long hair to buy a platinum FOB chain for Jim's antique gold watch. Meanwhile, Jim pawns his expensive watch to buy jeweled tortoiseshell combs for Della's expensive dresses. One dollar and eighty-seven cents. That was all. Sixty cents of it was the smallest money—pennies.
Pennies saved one and two by haggling with vegetable and meat sellers at the market. Conversations until the face burns in the silent awareness of the poor. Della counted it three times. One dollar and eighty-seven cents. And the next day will be Christmas. There was nothing left but to sit and cry.

So Della cried. It made me think that life is made up of little cries and smiles, and there are more little cries than smiles. Della stopped crying and dried her face. She stood by the window and looked unhappily at the gray cat walking around the gray fence in the gray yard.
Tomorrow was Christmas, and she only had one dollar and eighty-seven cents to buy a present for her husband, Jim. With this result, she spent months saving every penny she could. Jim was making twenty dollars a week, and it wasn't far. The expenses were more than she expected.

They always are. She spent many happy moments planning to buy him something nice. Something good and rare—worthy of Jim's honor. Between the windows of the room was a tall mirror. Suddenly, Della turned away from the window and stood in front of the mirror, looking at herself.
Her eyes glowed, but within twenty seconds her face lost color. Suddenly she pulled her hair down and let it fall all over. Now James Dillingham Young also had two properties that she valued. One of them was Jim's gold time piece, a watch that belonged to his father and grandfather.

Another was Della's hair. If the Queen of Sheba had lived in their building, Della would have let her hair out the window to wear out the Queen's jewels. So now Della's beautiful hair fell around her, glistening like a brown waterfall. It reached below her knees and was like a covering for her.
Then she quickly put it back. She stood still as a few tears fell on the floor. She put on a coat and an old brown hat. She danced out the door and down the street, still quick and bright in her eyes. Where she left off, the blackboard read, "Madame Sophrony. All kinds of hair products."
Della gasped and ran up the stairs to the store. "I'm buying hair," said the lady. "Hats off." "Twenty dollars," said the lady, lifting her hair with an experienced hand. The next two hours flew by. Della checked out all the stores to pick out a present for Jim.

She finally found it. It was definitely made for Jim and no one else. It was a chain—simple circular silver rings. It was perfect for Jim's gold watch. As soon as she saw it, she knew it was meant for him. It was like him.
Wonderful Lesson To Be Learned
Quiet and great value. She gave the shopkeeper twenty-one dollars and hurried home with the remaining eighty-seven cents. When Della got home, she started fixing what was left of her hair. Her hair was destroyed because of her love and desire to give a special gift.
Repairing the damage was a huge job. Within forty minutes, her head was covered with short round hair that made her look amazing like a schoolgirl. She took a long look in the mirror. "If Jim doesn't kill me before he takes a second look at me," she said to herself, "say I look like a singer. But what can I do—oh! what can I do with a dollar and eighty? and seven cents?"
By seven o'clock that evening, the coffee was made, the pot was hot on the back stove, and the meat was ready to cook. Jim was never late for work. Della was sitting by the door with a silver chain in her hand. Then, hearing his footsteps, she turned white for a moment.
She had a way of saying a little silent prayer over the simplest everyday things, and now she was whispering, "God, make him think I'm still beautiful." The door opened and Jim entered. He looked thin and very serious. Poor guy, he was only twenty-two years old and had a wife to look after.
