answer our question "About what percentage of Vanilla Visa customers have activation problems like this in the first place?" Despite what Vanilla Visa told us, we doubt that calling will help you get your money back, as almost everyone who wrote to us about the company said they had already tried.
However, it pays to make at least one good faith attempt to contact the company before ignoring them and going to the anti-fraud division of your state (or provincial) attorney general or the Federal Trade Commission go, or better yet, both. Consider this story from Gwen from Ontario, who told us on December 21st that I bought a $150 Vanilla Visa gift card on December 13th and sent it to my elderly mother in another province to complete her Christmas shopping.

I asked him for his name and employee number and he said he would not give out that information, it is none of my business. So I guess they are just stealing your money because they give you a gift card that is invalid and you can't talk to anyone to help you.
Gift cards for 25 dollars. I tried to find a balance by calling the customer service number. My call kept getting blocked. The website for the balance would not work. I tried to use the cards and they were rejected everywhere. I don't have the purchase receipt, and neither does the person who bought the cards.
