The evil Angris McBragg begins to protect Christmas by undermining the forces of goodness. Santa abandons his workshop and Comet, his reindeer, calls Orion and Orilla "soulmates" from another planet.

Dec. 8 – American Dad! – “For Whom The Sleigh Bell Tolls”
It was actually a return request as he had posted the same picture 3 years earlier. The image in question was a dwarf, an animated, grainy character. His origin was only that he appeared on TV in a photo of his girlfriend's acquaintance. Basically, this image was just a random moment in the lives of the people involved in the image.

Three children hugging, a giant TV in the background, a Super Nintendo from the early 90s on the floor next to it. The only other clue was the Ontario setting. Like almost everyone who found the picture, I had no idea where it came from.
He seemed to be of his era and the character seemed to be some sort of Christmas elf. It was unrecognizable as a Christmas episode from a more famous show and I had to laugh at every suggestion of The Littles. I suspected it was a one-off special that would probably only be shown in Canada, or even a promo that featured original animation.
The fact that it was on the Internet for years without a satisfactory result was the most incredible part of it. How did the collective mind of the internet not know where it came from? My gf and her friends spent years trying to figure out which cartoon (that appeared in the background of the family photo).

It's all detailed in this piece he wrote for the New Yorker, because the thing became so popular that even the New Yorker had to deal with it. Our faith in the internet was restored and the public was re-introduced to a forgotten Christmas classic: Soul Mates in The Gift of Light.

Or not. I don't get too many chances to keep up to date with The Christmas Spot, so I had to check it out and do a post about it this year. Also known as The Christmas Gift of Light, it was indeed a one-off Canadian production that few remember.
Unfortunately, this is not a forgotten classic. It's a rightfully forgotten animation that many people no doubt worked hard to produce, but despite the special's central theme of staying positive, almost anything can be done, their combined efforts have created it. The special is directed by Chris Schouten, who is credited with working on more famous productions like Anastasia and Heavy Metal, but has very little information about him on IMDB.
Dec. 8 – Mighty Morphin Power Rangers – “I’m Dreaming Of A White Ranger”
The acclaimed writer and creator of this special work, Gabrielle St. George has a similar slender profile. The special itself does not have many credits, because the people are listed, but the roles are not specified. Some of the voice talent is recognizable to people who have consumed a lot of animation in the same era, but not to the average person.
Since they are not credited to individual characters, I list them here in the same order as the actual credits: Al Waxman, Sheila McCarthy, Gema Zamprogna, Wayne Robson, John Stocker, Ray Landry, Robert Cait, Kurt Reis. The theme song "Soulmates" is sung by Shawne Jackson with animation by Schouten Animation and Jade Animation Productions.
The production company is listed as Soulmates Productions, which suggests to me that the people involved were probably hoping to start a franchise out of this, but that obviously didn't happen. This is The Christmas Spot, we want to do it, so we do it.

Right off the bat, I'm going to say I watch it on YouTube because the only way to do it is to find an old VHS copy. The video quality is good, but the audio sounds badly mixed. Is it a transfer or just the way the thing sounds?

i don't know The current special page is essentially about the power of positivity. It didn't even have to include Christmas, but that probably helped make it more marketable so they could get as many eyes on the thing as possible. This strategy obviously didn't work, but the reasoning seems to make sense.
We basically saw the same thing with another failed IP last year at Tattertown at Christmas. It saw reruns on a major cable network for at least several years before fading into obscurity. It starts right off the bat with a reminder of its source, as there is a disclaimer about adjusting the VCR's tracking for the best quality picture.
It was apparently distributed by Questar Home Video, not a brand I remember, and I had a bunch of different VHS tapes as a kid. The color combination looks familiar, so maybe it was a Canadian offshoot of another brand? Then we're left for a dark and snowy night when a narrator walks in and tells us it's the night before Christmas.
Yes, you read that right, so December 23rd arrived and they found the most awkward way to say it. This kind of repetition is repeated after a while, so maybe they thought it might be something that would work. Two sketchy looking characters wander around town.
