Our History
Perched atop Rocky Butte in Northeast Portland, the Grotto encompasses more than 62 acres (25 ha) of wooded gardens. Built in 1924 as an outpost of a Roman Catholic shrine, the nonprofit center dedicated to Our Lady of Sorrows now welcomes 300,000 pilgrims of all faiths each year.
The unique beauty of the Grotto combines a forest park with deep meditative bliss, featuring tranquil lanes lined with intricately carved Catholic shrines. There are two levels inside the grotto, and the lower garden is open to the public for free. It includes a large cave carved out of a 110-foot (33.5 m) basalt cliff in 1923 to serve as an outdoor cathedral.
A marble sculpture in the center of the grotto is Michelangelo's painting of Mary carrying the crucified body of Jesus, surrounded by flowers and glowing candlesticks. Nearby is a quiet road lined with tall trees; from low to high, piles of moss lend an aura of quiet solitude.
