At Christmas time, everyone goes out of their way to buy gifts for each other, with hilarious results. The moral of the story is that possessions, while valuable, are worthless in the grand scheme of things. The true selfless love that the characters Jim and Della share is greater than their wealth.
O. Henry closes the story by explaining the analogy between the story's authors, Della and James (or Jim), and the Holy Spirit of the Bible. The Gift of the Magi features O.
