The Gift 2000 Ending Explained
Unless spoilers are your thing, in which case it should be. Joel Edgerton's The Gift had a good second week at the box office. Some of this is likely due to strong word of mouth, but a large part of Edgerton's success must be credited to Edgerton's darkly beautiful efforts, not only as a film co-star, but also as a writer and first-time director of a film.
which explores terror in a truly Hitchcockian manner - right through to the devastating ending that shrouds the film's events in a veil of darkness. The ending of The Gift boils down to the big question of whether Jason Bateman's Simon and Rebecca Hall's Robyn's baby was fathered by Robyn's husband or her future rapist Gordo (Edgerton).
Although we're presented with overwhelming evidence of Gordo's possible paternity status, there are scattered clues throughout the film's narrative that suggest the stalker is just messing around with Simon's head - in retaliation for the rumors Simon spread a few years ago and those that go along with it
Critical Response
led . in his many sufferings. So who's the baby daddy and who's gonna be mad? Prepare to uncover the truth with us as we unravel the gift's greatest mystery. The case for Gordo's surprise entry into fatherhood is what the film relies on in its third act, so let's first break down the scenario that proves he committed the act.

Inside the gift package Simon had left when he got home from the hospital were three things: a house key; an audio recording of a conversation between Simon and Robyn at Gordo's "house" in which he lays out his alleged plan to steal Simon's wife and get her pregnant;
and the video recording of Gordo's intervention. While Robyn is actually drugged and the footage shows Gordo entering the house - wearing a monkey mask just to scare Simon even more - entering the house and climbing on top of Simon's unconscious wife, the footage is cut before any sort of sexual
activity can take place. This leaves many in doubt as to Gordo's paternity for the child born in the third act of The Gift. However, if the context cues are to be weighted as evidence, then Gordo's conversation with Robyn might be smoking, as he tells her about "good things that happen to good people."
Box Office
If Gordo is such a nutcase as Simon believes, this line is meant to be an admission of guilt and proof that Gordo cannot be held responsible for taking Robyn in an unconscious state and giving her the "gift" from him and Simon . difficult to achieve - that of a newborn child.
But when you look at Gordo's character, another narrative begins to unravel in the central mystery of the entire film. Let's explore the alternatives. On the surface, The Gift paints Gordo as a raging psychopath. However, the film does as much work in building a case for those who will defend it as it does for those who will convict it.

Most stories paint the bully as a bully. Joel Edgerton's writing style doesn't easily let audiences down. A special case are Gordo's actions during the parking lot confrontation between him and Simon, after which the latter comes to "apologize". While Simon characteristically bullies and eventually physically harms Gordo, Gordo does nothing to resist his attacker.
Even in the first two acts of The Gift, we don't see anything bad for Gordo - other than drugging Robyn. Yet presenting the gesture at that moment, the best thing Gordo does - from a horror perspective - is an ominous warning to Simon that he should have thought before he acted.
Where To Watch?
It all boils down to the fact that despite being a victim his entire life, Gordo never turns out to be the total monster that people expect based on the trailers The Gift released to promote his film. If anything, Gordo seems to be the kind of person who will persist with the flaws thrown at him, and he does so in his belief in "good things" that happen to "good people."
Through this lens, his statements in the hospital are not an admission of guilt but a vindication of faith. Robyn was a good person, so her wish to have children came true; while Simon's not-so-good behavior made her think it couldn't just be flesh and blood.
With both sides of the equation open, it's time to examine the facts and show where we stand. Based on the current facts and some other questions the film leaves in its narrative, it is certain that Gordo is not the father of Simon and Robyn's child.

The argument revolves around a moment in the film's overall narrative — and that was supposed to be Robyn's rape. Looking again at his outlook on life and the pattern of behavior he sets out in The Gift, Gordo is the type of person who believes in justice through superior moral status.
Move To La
Which meant he could be as good a manipulator as he wanted, but he could never influence the actions of someone with an attitude as dirty as their own. In my opinion anyway. Well, as the film previously stated, the reason Robyn and Simon are moving back to their old circle is because of Robyn's history of substance abuse - which is believed to be the reason for her miscarriage.
Which begs the question: if Robyn was drugged by Gordo, would that be enough of an event to disrupt her body chemistry and prevent a successful pregnancy? Certainly the damage done by reintroducing foreign substances into his body can reset his body chemistry. More importantly, we've previously seen Robyn taking drugs that were stolen from her neighbor's medicine cabinet and telling Simon she had an incident where she fell.
Considering that Simon saw this story as ordinary and that he was doping at the time, Gordo had to have the intent of El Rey of Planet Terror and some sort of magical DNA to overcome the pollutants in Robyn's system at the time. Again, that's if Gordo would have hurt Robyn in the first place, which I don't think happened.
But even though Gordo broke into the house, was drugged and making out with Robyn, and she didn't tell him — until, at an unspecified time, she got pregnant. That doesn't make his actions right at all. That doesn't just make him a father. Of course, one can argue for both sides of The Gift's central mystery.
