On average, the city receives a little less than 2000 mm of precipitation annually. Foreigners no longer need a travel permit (Surat Jalan) to enter Aceh, but an Indonesian visa is required. A 30-day visa can be obtained at Banda Aceh Airport. The embassy in Kuala Lumpur can sometimes process a visa on the same day if you complete all the paperwork before noon, although this only applies to Malaysian residents.
There are non-stop night buses, travel times vary from 09:00 to 13:00 - from Medan to Banda Aceh. Major bus companies such as PMTOH, Pelangi, Kurnia and Pusaka have offices on Jl. gajah mada, madan. The price varies from 110,000 rupiah for a regular size bus to 200,000 rupiah for a wide seater bus.
Minibuses can also take you to Banda Aceh from the Medan area, but the journey is usually longer. Prices are a bit cheaper than coaches. It is also possible to go from Medan to Banda Aceh via Kutakane and Takengon. It will be 20 hours in total.
Airlines fly daily between Banda Aceh and Medan, a 1-hour journey, Jakarta, a 2-hour-40-minute journey or Singapore, almost 4 hours. The airport is no longer served by a bus. The only way to get to the city area is by airport taxi, which costs Rp 100,000 (2019).

The taxi counter is on the far left when you get to the arrivals gate. Visa formalities at this airport are similar to other immigration gates in Indonesia. The nearest major (international) ferry terminal is Belawan Port, near Medan. It receives ships from Batam, Indonesia (a common route when arriving from Singapore).
The ferry from Penang no longer operates. From Ulhee-lhee, Banda Aceh Port, you can go to Pulau Weh and Pulau Aceh. The main modes of transport are becak (motor taxi) and labi-labi (public minibus). The sudden influx of money after the tsunami had accustomed local residents to excessive taxes, but now stability has returned.
Examples of Bekek rates are: Airport - Grand Mosque: 40,000 rupiah; Bus Terminal - Great Mosque: Rp 8,000; Grand Mosque - Penayong: 5000 rupiah. Within the city, 10,000 Rp should be generally. At the height of the post-tsunami relief effort, there were 850 NGOs, but many were non-Muslim religious organizations and their permits were not extended by the Indonesian government. There are interesting fish, meat and vegetable markets in the city centre.
There are also some small souvenir shops selling various local items. Hermes Palace Mall is located in the center of Banda Aceh. The shopping center has more than 100 shops with food, supermarkets and clothing stores. The Acehnese breakfast staple is nasi gurih, rice cooked in coconut milk, sold in coffee shops everywhere.
Food stalls and padang restaurants are open in the unspoilt part of town and fruit carts are everywhere. There are some nice coffee houses with soothing views of the rice field around Ule Kareng along Jl Tengku Iskander on the western outskirts of the city.
Three fast food chains, A&W, KFC and Pizza Hut can be found in the centre. As with all travel, common sense and a good attitude are all you need to have fun in this small town. However, there are a few points to consider. Although Banda Aceh is now safer than most European cities, it is still best not to go out alone after 10pm.

Due to the application of sharia law, alcohol is not allowed, although it is still possible. Violations of locally perceived interpretations of Sharia law can result in arrest by the Sharia police with corporal punishment and public ridicule meted out to the offending Muslim. Muslim women must normally wear headscarves in public.
Western bathing suits are not appropriate except in Sabang. Bag activity is rare, but be careful in crowded areas.
