He was a well-known soothsayer, who provided "divining information" to local people for a fee and sometimes gave them good advice. The filmmakers capitalize on every white trash stereotype and give Annie a clientele that makes The Jerry Springer Show look like My Three Sons.
Oscar winner Hilary Swank is regularly beaten by a hateful, crazy husband (Keanu Reeves!), and a local auto mechanic (Giovanni Ribisi) seeks help in her harsh bipolar world. Sometimes depression is so one-dimensional and cartoonish that it's hard not to laugh a little. When a rich local girl (Katie Holmes) disappears before her wedding, Annie is asked to share what she knows, whether it's from armchair gossip or actual sightings.
Of course, law enforcement is usually questionable, and Raimi and the writers have made characters thin enough to make you believe that someone might be responsible for the girl's disappearance. While that may be a good strategy to keep the audience guessing, the dialogue and tension are so thin that we don't care in the long run.
Daddy's Home 2 Movie Review
Where are Billy Bob Thornton and Tom Epperson who wrote the excellent One False Move? This lacks the film's creativity or development. And while Raimi provides some fuller, more introspective moments, a la A Simple Plan, they come too few, too late. The only real reasons to immerse yourself in The Gift are Blanchett and Ribisi: She's almost lost in her loving character, struggling with various internal and external issues, and Ribisi's turn as Buddy Cole is a gutsy performance.

Happy weekend. Dick Atkins Although Sam Raimi has his passionate lovers and haters, his film The Gift is one of his efforts that rarely gets attention from either camp.
Released in late 2000, The Gift flopped at the box office and failed to impress mainstream critics. Almost everyone associated with the film has moved on to bigger and better things. Star Cate Blanchett went from an attractive, young, Oscar-nominated talent to one of the biggest movie stars of our time.
Raimi jumped right into the Spider-Man series, while co-writer Billy Bob Thornton, who based the film's story on his mother's experiences, continued to be Billy Bob Thornton. The supporting cast, including Hillary Swank, Keanu Reeves, Katie Holmes, Giovanni Ribisi, J.K. Simmons, Kim Dickens, Rosemary Harris and Greg Kinnear, have won Oscars, directed movies and television series and even escaped Scientology.
However, there are plenty of bad movies with good pedigrees and The Gift is not one of them. A Southern Gothic film at its finest, The Gift is a brutal film that requires audiences to have a keen eye, the ability to suspend disbelief and appreciate a coherent feminist sensibility.
