The Children's District, originally from Dairy, was originally conceived to cater to kids visiting Central Park. Playgrounds as we know them today didn't exist until the early 20th century, so the Children's Area, built in 1872, is the only place in the park dedicated to the youngest visitors.
Today, this area southeast of Central Park is home to the Dairy, Heckscher Playground and Ballfields, Chess & Checkers House, Carousel and Playmates Arch. The Dairy is a Victorian cottage designed by Calvert Vaux and built between 1869 and 1871 in the heart of the children's area.
As the name suggests, this beautiful structure comes from fresh milk and treats for children and caregivers. Families can enjoy a drink under the Dairy Loggia (open porch) and enjoy the cool breeze from the nearby pool. The large lawn in front of the dairy farm provides a place for children to play.

The Dairy became Central Park's first visitor center in 1979 and was one of the Conservancy's restoration projects in the early 1980s. At that time, we restored the building's historic and colorful loggia, which had been demolished in the mid-20th century. Drinks are served under the Dairy Terrace, and visitors can enjoy the cool breeze from the nearby swimming pool. The large lawn in front of the building provides a place for children to play.

The building eventually fell into disrepair and was closed to the public in the mid-20th century. The restoration of the building was one of the first projects of the Changchun Association.

The Central Park Dairy, now an information center and gift shop in the park, began as a source of fresh milk for children in the late 1800s.
The Dairy was established in 1870; it was a time when fresh milk for children was hard to come by and was very popular with parents. Built at the southern end of the park, The Dairy was originally a children's area, serving milk and snacks to children in a cool, relaxing atmosphere by the pond.
