Today I will be reviewing a book about the Christmas story about the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree by David Rubel called The Carpenter's Gifts. The story is about a young boy named Henry who helps his father collect Christmas trees to sell to people in midtown Manhattan.

The Carpenter's Gift
Henry and his family lived in a house where it was very cold. Henry needed a warm house to live in. He never gave up hope and always seemed happy with his situation. This led to Henry's father calling him to collect some large Christmas trees to sell to the needy in midtown Manhattan, New York.
After Henry and his father deliver Christmas trees to the hardworking construction workers, they decide to decorate the tallest tree, the first tree in Rockefeller Center. While the construction workers used tin cans as ornaments, Henry used newspaper and made a string to decorate the tree.
Henry didn't want the day to end. It made his day as the street lights came on and the cans began to shine in the light. Henry thought it was a magical moment. He wished Christmas to end the day well. Henry wished that one day he and his family would live in a decent, warm home.

After making his wish, a pinecone caught Henry's eye and saw. He picked it up and took the cherry tile in his hand. When it was time to go home, Henry's father followed him and said, "Time to go, Sparky." And so Henry and his father said good night to the construction workers and went home again.

On Christmas morning, Henry sees several trucks with piles of wood in their trunks. Thanks to the kindness of construction workers and fellow residents, Henry gets his wish for a nice, warm house to replace his family's drafty tray. As a gift, Frank gives Henry his own hammer, telling him, "This will come in handy one day."
After the house was completed, Henry and his family were very grateful. They had a lovely dinner in their new warm home. Henry had his own room and thought about his Christmas wish. He couldn't believe it was true. Out of the kindness of his own heart, Henry planted pinecones by the house at night.
He poured water and put it out. As time passed, Henry grew up with the tree. He became a great carpenter and built many projects with his skillful hands. As time progressed, he had a family of his own. As an old man, Henry thought long and hard about giving his pinecone tree to a Rockefeller Center worker.

Henry had received so much as a son and it was time to give back. So he repaid the gift, donating an enormous tree grown from pinecones that became the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree. After his Rockefeller Center tree brought joy to thousands, its wood will be used to build a home for a family in need.
In the end, Henry gives a special hammer to a young girl, and she responds with the same sentiment that he told him when he was a boy: "It will come in handy one day." It was the same hammer that Frank had given him when he was a child.

Henry thought it was a magical moment. This was The gift of the carpenter taught us how to help our neighbors in times of need. Henry is the embodiment of bringing families together. Great things happen when people choose to help each other work together for the greater good.
