Sam starts the day by using online banking to check his account. He sees that a $500 direct deposit was made and his available balance shows $2,000.
Sam's available balance does not reflect checks he has written or scheduled payments on bills that have not yet cleared. Sam remembers writing a personal check for $100 to his babysitter and has a $50 check for his niece. Sam should consider this money unavailable for future purchases and keep enough money in his account to process these payments to avoid overdrafts.
