So Many Ways To Surprise Someone Special
2,500 each for a balcony stateroom aboard Holland America Line. Oosterdam. We departed from Buenos Aires, Argentina and eventually arrived in Santiago, Chile with layovers. I was surprised by many things on my trip, but here are a few things that stood out. On board, we were transported back to the Northern Hemisphere's version of the December holidays.
Fake snow, pine trees and holly decorated the halls of Oosterdam. The living room was decorated with a large Christmas tree which was lit during the ceremony as soon as the ship left the sea. I couldn't even believe how big the ship's gingerbread village was.

I can't forget the surprise I had walking the halls of the state rooms and seeing different decorations on the doors, some holiday celebrations or panels with writings that put a smile on my face. With the potential for such a large crowd, I was worried about becoming claustrophobic on most days at sea of the 22-day cruise.
Fortunately, I rarely found the ship to feel busy. I really enjoyed spending time walking around the empty deck. I was also surprised to see many of the lounge chairs empty during my walking tour. When I think of cruises, I always picture people sunbathing, walking the boardwalk and sitting on lounge chairs sipping tropical drinks.
Make Occasions Even More Special
It was hot when we started our cruise in Buenos Aires and we gradually transitioned to cold and windy weather. Although it was a bit chilly at times, blankets were always available. Although my fellow passengers apparently disagreed, I still thought spending time on deck was the best part of the cruise.
Cruises always have plenty of entertainment on board, but they don't always have classes. On this trip, I was impressed by the quality of lectures given by an Antarctic explorer, a political scientist, and a high school geology teacher. The geology teacher's preference was my favorite and I noticed that the main hall was always full for these lectures.
Cruises usually involve a lot of time lounging on deck and hanging out in open-air lounges, but the interior spaces remained crowded during this voyage. After about a week, the puzzle and game area became one of the best indoor places to see the beautiful scenery of the Antarctic Peninsula.

Lots of people seemed to camp out on sunbeds every day. I was also surprised to find many people gathered on the decks of the ships as we passed the scenic spots. At one point I couldn't believe the captain opened the bow (front) of the ship so we could all get closer to the amazing scenery.
Staterooms That Celebrate In Style
I spent a lot of time outside looking at the Antarctic Peninsula with my binoculars and camera. The buffet on the lido deck was full of food from many places. The pizza and pasta stations were popular, but I also saw passengers drawn into the station with roast beef, pork and lamb.
There was also a salad station every day. Some days the deck had special stations with locally inspired food - I loved the paella we were served while in Chile. Overall, my favorite station was the one where I could order congee (Chinese rice porridge) with omelette and miso soup.
It was a long journey of 22 days, so I expected many performers to perform more than once and some performances to be repeated. To my surprise, the in-house entertainment was varied and not boring. There were shows in most of the halls and at least two different shows on the main stage a week.
Three weeks of sharing a small room together did not separate us. Our biggest problem was the occasional accident while looking for our binoculars when we spotted a whale or penguin on our room's porch. Since this was a long trip, we quickly got into the habit and I think that helped.
