The long-running conflict between the Asian Independence Movement (GAM) and the Indonesian Army (TNI) has been settled for the time being with a peace accord of 15 August 2005.
Since then the peace process has been fairly smooth. In 2006, the province held its first direct and democratic local elections. In 2007, Erwandi Yusuf, the first democratically elected governor, was inaugurated. Banda Aceh has a rainforest climate with a nearly constant average temperature. The average annual temperature of the city is 27 °C.
However, the city experiences wet and dry seasons, with June to August being the driest months of the year. Banda Aceh does not have a true dry season month with an average rainfall of less than 60 mm. On average, the city receives less than 2000 mm of rain annually.
By Bus[Edit]
Foreigners no longer require a travel permit (Surat Jalan) to enter Aceh, but an Indonesian visa is required. It is possible to obtain a 30-day visa on arrival at Banda Aceh airport. The embassy in Kuala Lumpur can sometimes process a visa on the same day if you complete all paperwork before noon, although this only applies to Malaysian residents.
Medan to Banda Aceh - There are non-stop night buses with travel times between 9 and 13 hours. Major bus companies like PMTOH, Pelangi, Kurnia and Pusaka have their offices on JL. Gajah Mada, Meydan. Prices range from IDR 110,000 in a regular seat bus to IDR 200,000 in a wide seat bus.

Minibuses from the Medan area can also take you to Banda Aceh, but journeys are generally longer. The prices are a bit cheaper than the buses. It is also possible to travel from Medan to Banda Aceh via Kutacan and Taekagon. In total there will be 20 days.
Airlines fly daily between Banda Aceh and Medan, 1 hour journey, Jakarta, 2 hours 40 minutes journey, or Singapore, approximately 4 hours. There is no longer a bus that serves the airport. The only way from the airport to the downtown area is by taxi, which is fixed at IDR 100,000 (2019).

The taxi counter is on the far left as you exit the arrivals gate. Visa formalities at this airport are the same as at other Indonesian immigration gates. The nearest ferry terminal (international) is Belawan Port near Medan. Batam receives ships arriving from Indonesia (a common route when arriving from Singapore).
Penang Ferry no longer operates. You can go to Pulau Weh and Pulau Aceh from Ulhi-Lahi, the port of Banda Aceh. The main modes of transport are becak (motorcycle taxis) and labi-labi (public minibuses). Locals got used to overloading due to the sudden influx of money after the tsunami, but now stabilization has returned.
Examples of Bekak rates are: Airport - Grand Mosque: IDR 40,000; Bus Station - Grand Mosque: IDR 8,000; Grand Mosque - Penyong: IDR 5,000. Usually IDR 10,000 within the city should do it. It is possible to go on a "tsunami tour" as there are still many boats inside and other memorials dedicated to the devastating day in 2004.

At the peak of the post-tsunami relief effort there were 850 NGOs, but many of these were non-Muslim religious organizations and their permits were not extended by the Indonesian government. There are interesting fish, meat and vegetable markets in the city centre.
There are also a few small souvenir shops selling various local items. Hermes Palace Mall is located in the heart of Banda Aceh. The mall has over 100 stores along with food courts, supermarkets and clothing stores. The basic Acehnese breakfast is delicious nasi, rice cooked in coconut milk, sold in cafes everywhere.
Padang food stalls and restaurants open in the unheralded part of town and fruit carts are ubiquitous. There are some nice cafes around Uli Kareng along JL Tengku Iskandar on the western outskirts of the city with soothing views of the rice paddies. The center houses three fast food restaurant chains, A&W, KFC and Pizza Hut.
As with all travelers, common sense and good manners are all you need in this small town. However, there are some points to keep in mind. Even though Banda Aceh is currently safer than most European cities, it is best not to go out alone after 10 pm.
