The apostle Paul noted in one of his letters to the young Timothy: "I remember your true faith, because the faith you had at first fills your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice in part. And I know that the same faith remains strong in you."

2 Timothy 1:5, NLT). We can learn a lot from these words. First of all, of all the things we respect our mothers and grandmothers, we should be very grateful for the faith they gave us. I was blessed to have a Christian mother and grandparents who stood faithful to the Lord and were strong spiritual influences in my life.

Stirring Up Spiritual Gifts

I understand that not everyone has the same experience, but I think any Christian can definitely think of people who were spiritual role models. Indeed, we all need positive examples to follow and should strive to be role models for others. In his letter to the Philippian church, Paul implored, "Brothers and sisters, model your lives after my life and learn from those who follow our example" (Philippians 3:17).

Who acted as a role model for your life? It seems that Timothy had several examples, including his mother, his grandmother, and Paul. I find it very interesting, however, that immediately after Paul acknowledged the influence of his mother and grandmother, he exhorted the young minister for "the gift of God that is in you by lifting up my hands" (2 Timothy 1:

6, NKJV). You see, although Timothy had received spiritual gifts through the influence of others, he had to "lay down" those gifts himself. What does it mean to awaken the gift of God? Think about what happens when you make sweet tea or lemonade. When you first pour the sugar into the drink, it settles to the bottom.

Good mixing is necessary for the sugar to mix well and fulfill its purpose of sweetening the entire drink. Likewise, we may have faith or spiritual gifts within us, but we must keep them stirred up so that they do not remain hidden or buried.

Four Ways You Can Stir Up Your Spiritual Gifts

Others may be a spiritual influence, but you must awaken your gifts and develop your faith for yourself. Another translation of the Bible expresses that Paul was caring for Timothy in this way: "set on fire the spiritual gift that God has given you" (NLT).

You may have a spiritual gift smoldering within you, but you have the ability to ignite that gift into flames. It must continually extinguish your spiritual flames to develop a strong and lasting faith. I love the words Paul chose to describe the faith of Timothy's mother and grandmother.

He called "true" faith; Other translations use the words "sincere" or "unfeigned" faith. This means that Timothy learned to have a consistent, true, battle-tested and pure relationship with God. This is the kind of faith we should all aspire to! If you are strong in faith today, be grateful for the contributions others have made in your spiritual life.

Let his example be an inspiration to invest in the lives of others. If you need to grow in your faith, find positive spiritual influences as examples. When we learn from others and constantly encourage our spiritual gifts, we can develop our own true, faithful and imperfect faith in God.
