For someone who hasn't played WvW in years (and never played much of it), getting the Gift of Battle and 200 Skirmish Claim tickets seemed like a daunting task. Then I started and found that I had covered most of it in 3 evenings, or about 6 hours total.

I was just short of 100 tickets.) Here's my guide to getting the Gift of War (and other stuff) for WvW newbies, if anyone's interested. Leaderboard position has little to do with your individual rewards, so there's no need to switch servers. (I did all of this on Desolation, which ranks about ½ higher and was often 3rd in skirmishes.) On that note, don't worry about your world results or potential points or the difference between them.

Match and Clash. The score has a small effect on how quickly you get a claim ticket, but not enough to worry about. But the waypoint and repairs are free, so the only problem is running back. Don't wait for people to revive you, there is no time.

WvW's reward story progression is similar to HoT's meta-events - you build it up by doing things and then it gradually decays when you're inactive, so it's better to do a little at a time.

Can play longer. Peak times are the best simply because there are more people online and more activity. You wait for a group to form, you wait for a group to move, you wait for a siege to build, you wait for a siege to destroy walls, you wait for points to be taken.

you wait for the enemy to come, you wait for the enemy to come. Skip, wait for people to clear their bags / go to the bathroom / in the same group chat… and sometimes (at least if you're not in a group chat) it's not clear why you're waiting.

Sometimes you spend what seems like ages working towards a goal, only to abandon it and go somewhere else because plans have changed. But that's okay. Like I said, WvW's participation in the reward lane builds and decays slowly over time, so you don't really lose anything by waiting, and it's an important part of strategic play.

Which allows you to get more in the long run. WvW uses the same equipment as PvE, but you can set different attributes and skills. I'm not recommending builds because I have no idea what to recommend, but there is an option for a unique WvW setup if you want.

I highly recommend some kind of speed boost (no confirmations yet...) but it makes the commander much easier to live with. (I think Signet of the Hunts passive 25% boost is good.) I also recommend unlocking WvW Gliding ASAP (needs HOT). To do this, open the WvW menu and select the last tab - Rank and Abilities and scroll down.

You need three global ability points to unlock the glider, and you get them by getting XP in WvW, so you might have to play a bit before you get it, but it's worth it. It's worth getting there early. Don't forget to also select the Gift of Battle reward story (3rd tab below).

There's no point in working for a reward you don't want. When you open the WvW menu, you have 5 maps to choose from - Eternal Battlegrounds, 1 Desert Frontier, 2 Alpine Frontier and Obsidian Sanctuary. Ignore that last one, it's a jumping puzzle. But you can choose from a few others.

Other Tips

Many prefer some, but all will do. If you can, I recommend going without a queue as it's easier to get in there. You start in your team's home base, which is completely protected from enemies and a host of NPCs that provide various services.

Now is a good time to set up your build and check the map. It's really confusing at first, lots of colorful lines and symbols, some of them moving, and it can feel like a mess. Basically, the symbols are checkpoints and the color indicates who controls them.

Lines indicate an area where location control is important, as you can only slide into areas that your team controls. There are 4 main types of checkpoints: Caps, Towers, Camps and Ruins: The Match Overview tab in the WvW menu shows what each team controls on each map.

This may seem like a map where your team's win is the best, but it just means you have fewer objectives to manage and participation credits are harder to come by. I find that the cards you're missing are often great for tracking reward track progress.

Wvw Dailies Without Any Combat

If, like me, you don't play WvW or PvP (there were no reward tracks the last time I played), the story itself is confusing. But it's actually quite simple. Each track has 7 small prizes and then the main prize. But that's not the first thing you'll find.

All 8 sections are divided into 5 subsections (you can see this when you hover your mouse over it). For example, the Gift of Battle path gives you 2 Balthazar Disciple Loot Boxes, 5 War Memories, 2 Balthazar Acolyte Loot Boxes, a Tome of Knowledge, and then the first "minor" reward - 4 Obsidian Shards.

Your progress towards the next reward will be displayed in a small pop-up menu above the map. The timer will count down until the next time you get rewards, and the number next to it will show how many points you've earned. For more participation, you earn more points (level 6 is the maximum) and increase your participation level by… well, participating.

Kill enemies, claim items, complete events, defend objectives, etc. You can also occasionally find WvW Rank Chests and Skirmish Chests throughout the map. Rank boxes have random loot, but most importantly you have another rank point to spend on the rank and abilities tab. Skirmish Chests are on the game overview page and contain cool stuff, especially how you can get Skirmish Claim Tickets.
