Leonard was a resident of Westport and a graduate of UConn. He died in Manhattan at Lenox Hill Hospital after a brief illness. Leonard's son, Stu Leonard Jr., posted a statement on the grocery store's website acknowledging his father's hard work as a dairy farmer and business owner.
He wrote: “I was lucky and grateful to have a wonderful father.” Following the announcement of his death on Thursday afternoon, other government leaders and prominent people in the state offered their condolences. Gov. Ned Lamont took to Twitter to pay tribute to Leonard, describing Stew Leonard's as an "iconic Connecticut business" where "thousands of memories" were made.
