Many bus, plane and train tickets are sold out in advance. Chuseok (추석) is celebrated on the 15th day of the 8th month of the lunar calendar. Although the exact day changes every year, Thanksgiving in Korea is usually celebrated in September and October. Below are the dates when Chuseok is celebrated in the following years.
In 2023, Chuseok falls on September 28. The three-day holiday period for Chuseok includes the day of Chuseok and the days before and after it. The day before Chuseok is when Koreans usually go back to their hometowns to celebrate Chuseok. To greet someone during Chuseok, you can say 추석잼 아성세요 (chuseok jal bonaeseio).
It means "Happy Chuseok". It's like saying "Happy Thanksgiving" in English. You can also say 오이스 한가위 되세요 (jeulgeoun hangavi doneseio) which means "happy Hangavi". Some people also say 임구고 풍성한 한가위 되세요 (jeulgeopgo pungseonghan hangavi doseio) which means "may you have a happy and prosperous Hangavi".
What Is Hangawi?
According to legend, the kingdom's ancient king Silla started a month-long weaving competition between two teams. The team that wove the most fabrics won, and the loser was treated to food, drink and other gifts. This is how the tradition of thanksgiving began almost 2,000 years ago.
Some scholars also link Chuseok to the history of Korea, where agriculture was a large part of daily life. Koreans usually offered rituals to the ancestors to give thanks and celebrate the harvest month. Traditionally, the purpose of Chuseok was to bring family members together during the full harvest month.

Japchae is another traditional Korean dish that is prepared and eaten during Chuseok. This noodle dish is fried in sesame oil with mushrooms, onions, carrots, spinach, etc.
When Is Chuseok?

A modern custom observed during Chuseok is gift giving. Although not everyone has to give gifts, it is considered a nice gesture to give a gift to the host family (usually the grandparents or the eldest son of the family) when you visit their home for the holidays.
Some people also choose to give gifts to the partners or seniors of the company they work for as a goodwill gesture. Since Chuseok is a family event, it is more practical to give something that the whole family can share. Food is likely to be the best choice, especially for those going to another family's house to celebrate.
