GILLS ROCK (NBC 26) — A 100-year-old building faces its biggest challenge yet as it's covered in ice over the Christmas holidays. Simply Scandinavian Gift Shop at Giles Rocku in Door County is currently covered in thick ice. The owners shared photos of the snow-covered building on Facebook over Christmas. Gretel Sannikas, owner of the gift shop, said recent storms over the holidays brought strong winds that caused huge waves to crash into the building.

Low temperatures caused ice to form on the structure. Sannikas believes there was about half a meter of ice on the structure. She said she had never seen ice accumulation like this in the area before. Sannikas call it the best and the worst in nature.

It is not clear if the building will suffer serious damage. Sannikas said she was waiting for warmer temperatures to melt the ice. The building is about a hundred years old on Gills Rock Wharf and has served as a gift shop for the past 30 years.
