We lived close to town and went to the beach every day. Once I needed a bag and went to a street vendor. I wanted a vegan backpack and found a bag that had these unique designs. I took the bag home and people stopped me on the street in America to tell me how much they loved my bag.
I found myself traveling through Sumatra working on a documentary series on natural medicine and healing. One day I also came across the embroidered designs that you now see on Banda bags. I needed to know exactly where they came from, so I traveled to the countryside and met the women who made these designs.
They are amazing artists who design unique, hand-embroidered designs and their work blew me away. I knew right away that I had to start working with these women who seemed to create these designs like magic. My search for these magical and unique designs led me to a village in the Banda Aceh region of Sumatra.

Traveling Sumatra, Running Into A Unique Design
If you've paid attention to the news over the past fifteen years, you'll remember that this is the place that has experienced the worst tsunami in the world. The earthquake that shook this region literally shook the earth on its axis. The subsequent tsunami devastated the region, killing more than two hundred thousand people.
I came after this incident, and ten years after it happened. Looking around I can only imagine that was only a week ago. I couldn't believe this is where these beautiful models were born. Banda Bags is a collection of 100% non-toxic and durable art items.
