The monks make cheese that doesn't need to be refrigerated for 3-5 days, so we were able to buy it and take it home. It was amazing! We really enjoyed the visit but didn't get a chance to see anything other than the gift shop and weren't sure where we could and couldn't go.
Always good. I can always count on good quality food. Sometimes the service is not very good, but the food never disappoints me. He had just returned from a vacation at the abbey. The only disappointment was that he had to leave. As a non-Catholic, I expected to spend a few days of quiet meditation and reading to start the year.
I visited Lauds when I came more out of curiosity than anything, but ended up attending every service every day I was there. There is nothing more beautiful and inspiring than the singing of psalms in the darkness of pure sacred space. The brothers are hospitable, the bourbon fudge they make is delicious, and there's no better way to rejuvenate!
An atmosphere of peaceful prayer. I was also greeted by two monks at the gift shop and helped fill out some interesting information. I grew up a Protestant in Marion County, Kentucky. I have never been familiar with the beauty, history and culture that Catholics have brought to our area.

It was wonderful to walk around the abbey, feel its blessings and appreciate the humility with which these monks were willing to submit. The abbey is very beautiful but you have to be there at the right time. I'd love to have a retreat here, but it's not meant to be a quick stop while riding the terrain.

and saw information about this place. When we arrived we were very disappointed that it was closed due to a perfect day. We double checked their website and didn't see any such ads. Luckily we only traveled about 11 miles to get there. Another person in the parking lot came from out of state to visit.
It would be so easy to put a notice on a website to close or to force innocent people to work in a gift shop. The abbey itself seems like a good place to visit, and I came from Tennessee to go to the gift shop, Friday, January 4, 2019. However, I won't be returning because I don't feel like a safe place to travel.
navigation took me through the city of New Haven. As I was driving through town on the road to the abbey, I saw a Kentucky State Trooper (KST) and followed him for about a mile. At one point, KST was following my car. KST eventually stopped following me because there was no reasonable doubt to stop me.

It was clear to me that KST had presented me as black and pulled me out of other vehicles traveling in the area. It's a shame because there is some level of tourism supporting the abbey, but based on my own experience, I can't recommend my friends and family to visit it.
I'm afraid the surroundings may not have far surpassed the feelings of 1848 when the abbey was founded! It is understood that the Abbey cannot control the activities of KST. However, it would be remiss if I did not inform potential visitors of this issue.
We went to get fruit pie and enjoy the beautiful grounds!! We also tried the fudge and it was amazing...it was our favorite!! In the last 5 years I have made four trips to Gethsemane. I recommend this to all my friends who are interested in finding a quiet place to meditate, relax or develop their spiritual life.
Whether you are a Catholic or not, this is a great place to learn and grow. When each of my three sons graduated from high school, I told them that they should spend a few days with me in Gethsemane: no batteries, no electronics. I wanted them to experience the discipline of silence and explore their own spiritual life.
To be honest, they were worried. In the end, they were grateful, although they weren't sure they would do it again. :) While on the ground, guests must observe the discipline of silence. There are no conversations. There are two dining areas next to the cafeteria.

In one, you listen to recorded messages and conversations about spirituality, and in the other, down the hallway from the dining room, there is a harsh silence. As soon as you leave the territory of the abbey, the conversation will be allowed. Across the street from the monastery are thousands of hiking trails through the Kentucky hills.
Maps can be obtained from the monks at the front desk. On my last visit, I took my fishing rod with me and caught some bass from the ponds on site. The place is beautiful. If you go in the summer, expect to sweat - a lot!
Take a tour of the Bardstown distillery and buy some bourbon. The on-site museum and gift shop offers an informative and well-made video of the life of the monastery. You can also buy gifts and food prepared by monks and other monks and nuns throughout the country.
Be sure to bring your camera along as well as your magazine. The monks oversee the daily offices and everyone is welcome to attend. Monks' Talks are available throughout the week and people can pray the rosary in the church. And although I am from the Protestant tradition, I wanted my children to know and be aware of the different manifestations of faith, including services and prayer of the rosary. Do yourself a favor, don't be afraid to "shut up" and invest.
improve your health by spending a few days in Gethsemane. I went on a Sunday and had an evening prayer with the monks at 5:30! Amazing experience! The address I entered into my GPS was slightly wrong, so keep driving until you see it on the left!
