Just over an hour from Huntsville in Hanceville, Alabama, near Cullman, you'll find a beautiful temple with a different story. The Shrine of the Blessed Sacrament of Our Lady of the Angels Monastery is in the middle of "nowhere". The nature of the temple is an amazing story.

An acquaintance told a friend that he had been to Europe and seen the temples there and said, "You mustn't go to Europe. This temple is more beautiful than anything there." As a Protestant, my expectation and experience may differ from that of my Catholic friends.

I was disappointed by the size of the place. At first I saw the church as just another tourist attraction. I was disappointed that I couldn't take pictures inside. When we left I was very surprised and realized that the pictures don't do justice to the temple's words.

This is one of those places where you can experience it for yourself. We were led to a meeting room right next to the entrance and given an informative talk about the monastery by Brother Matthew, one of the six "brothers" who live in the two-story warehouse just inside the monastery entrance.

The brothers help the sisters and mother Angelica with crafts, landscaping, building and plastering. The sisters moved to church in December 1999 from their church in Irondale, Alabama. There are thirty-two nuns in Our Lady of the Angels Monastery, ranging in age from 20 to 70 years old.

The Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament is a closed community, which means that they take vows of poverty, chastity and obedience and that the main purpose of their lives is constant devotion to the Most Blessed Sacrament. The Our Lady of the Angels Monastery receives about ten calls and letters a week with requests and questions about a job.

The monastery can accommodate a total of 42 nuns. Special permission from the Pope is required for the nuns. With permission, Mother Angelica went to Bogotá, Columbia 5 1/2 years ago. One day when he went to pray, he saw outside his face a picture of Jesus nine or ten years old.

As he walked, he saw a living statue, turned to it and said, "Build me a temple, and I will help those who help you." Mother Angelica didn't know what this meant, because she had never heard of a Catholic church being called a "temple."

He later discovered that St. Peter's Temple was a Catholic church, a church. Returning from his journey, he began looking for land in Alabama. He found more than 300 acres owned by a 90-year-old woman and her children. They were not Catholic, but when Mother Angelica told them she wanted the country to build a temple to Jesus, the woman replied, "That's a good reason for me."

The construction of the temple took 5 years and is still under construction. Currently, a gift shop and convention center are under construction. Brice Construction of Birmingham has over 200 employees and at least 99% are non-Catholic. The architecture is 13th century. Mother Angelica needed marble, gold, and cedar for the temple that God commanded David to build in the Bible.

The tile comes from South America, the stones from Canada and the copper from Madrid, Spain. The floors, columns and pillars are made of marble. A rare red jasper marble from Turkey was used for the red crosses on the temple floor. The wood for the posts, doors and confessional is cedar wood imported from Paraguay.

Spanish workers came to build the doors. Stained glass windows were imported from Munich, Germany. The Laws of the Stations of the Cross are engraved by hand. One of the most impressive parts of the temple is the gold leaf wall. There was an eight-foot pedestal with gilding on it for the dedicated army.

Two nuns pray in 1 to 1 1/2 hour rotations 24 hours a day behind the temple's gold leaf wall. The purpose of the nuns is to pray and worship Jesus. They pray for those who do not pray for themselves. The nuns always focus on silence, solitude and prayer.

There is a prayer request box on the receptionist's desk and many requests are taken over the phone. Five donors paid for the building, all construction costs and materials. They are supporters of Mother Angelica and wish to remain anonymous. Mother Angelica says we spend money on theme parks, malls, casinos and the White House.

He thinks that God deserves that quality and the best house of prayer. There is a dress code in the church - no shorts, tank tops, tank tops or mini skirts. No photos are allowed to be kept in the temple or words in the temple.

I thought it would be difficult to follow this advice. However, I was so impressed by the beauty and sanctity of the temple that I couldn't say if I wanted to. At the top of the church is a cross. It was destroyed in a storm a few years ago.

Workers first thought it was lightning. After questioning the people in the sky, they found that there was no lightning or wind in the area. The top of the cross is cut off with a white knife, leaving a "T" shape. A story about replacing the cross.

Mother Angelica discovered that this "T" is the last letter of the Hebrew alphabet. It also stood for 'God in us'. In Ezekiel 9, this letter represents blessing and protection. This "T" or "number" cross represents St. Francis in the 13th century and reflects the period of the church's architecture.

Mother Angelica chose to leave the cross as it was and saw it as a symbol of God. The temple is open daily for prayer and worship. The public is invited every day at 7:00 am to attend the convent mass of the nuns. After playing each day, a confession is heard.

Tours are available for groups of 10 or more. The gift shop is open Monday through Saturday. I thought it was a very expensive and scary trip. Take enough time to walk around and stay in the temple and just pray and meditate (all day if you want!), in this beautiful building.
