Shell Gift Card Scam - says a Facebook post dated June 13, 2022, which links to a website displaying the British multinational corporation's logo and referring to a "loyalty program." The same claim is circulating on Facebook here and here. The posts, all published in June, come as American households and businesses face challenges from rising inflation and record gas prices.

I often use Shell gift cards during Publix promotions. I recently had a balance of $10.47 on one of these cards and got a message at the pump telling me to go inside for authorization. I did and the clerk ran my card through their readers and they said the balance was zero.

She objected, saying that I must have $10.47. She said "you can always dial the # on the back" which I did. The operator I got asked me how many links I tried to authorize the card. I told her that I played it at the pump once and they turned it on once inside.

Then she babbled something I couldn't understand because she had such a noticeable Asian accent. I eventually realized that she "balanced" me. If I hadn't followed this, I would have been out $10.47. This is completely unacceptable. I had two similar incidents before with a small balance of $3.50, but I didn't know how to track it.

Now I know. Someone is making money off of it, but they aren't gift card buyers. Purchased a Shell gift card on July 8, 2017 at a Kroger store. I purchased two (2) $100.00 gift cards that day. In one of the cards used immediately I was waiting for a trip to use another card.

Check Card Balance

The card was still in the package and still sealed, on September 12, 2107 I took the card at the pump out of the package and tried to use the card, then the pump said the card was declined and I needed to go to the cashier.

The cashier turned on the pump inside to give me gas. After filling up the gas, I returned to the station to complete the transaction and the gift card was still declined. Fortunately, I had another payment method. After completing the transaction, I contacted [protected] according to the instructions on the gift card package and then learned that the card had a zero balance.

The agent informed me over the phone that the balance on the card was spent somewhere in California on August 16, 2017, and I was in Georgia in August, not California. I have not given the card information to anyone in California or authorized them to use the card.

My guess is that the number was stolen and the balance was transferred to another card/account to be used by a person in California. If you buy one of these gift cards, use it right away! The same thing happened to me yesterday in California.
