Shell Gift Card Scam - Australian shoppers are being warned of fraudulent online gift card scams that could cost victims $69 in two weeks. Digital security company Avast said it had uncovered a scam luring Australian Instagram users with the "promise" of a $500 gift card from global fast-food giant Shein.

However, there is no Shein gift card, and the victim unknowingly signs up for a subscription that charges the card $69 every two weeks, but receives nothing. Small but important registration details are hidden in the terms and conditions. Avast cybersecurity expert Stephen Kho has warned that Australia is in the midst of a "scandal".

He told 7NEWS.com.au "There is a clear correlation between Australians' confidence in their ability to detect fraud and an increase in the amount lost to fraud each year". "In fact, this arises more from our fear of embarrassment.
