Not valid at Roy's Mainland or Humble Market Kitchin locations. Head! Roy's Restaurant gift cards no longer work in Hawaii. Yes, even gift cards purchased at places like Costco in Hawaii. Confused, right? Let's talk about what's going on here. Roy's restaurant locations in the continental United States are not owned by its namesake, chef Roy Yamaguchi.

For a long time, the Outback Steakhouse Company, Bluman Brands, was the owner. But five years ago, he sold the 15-restaurant chain to United Ohana LLC of Dallas, Texas. The Hawaii locations, by the way, remain owned by Roy. Exactly what happened, I'm not sure.

But when I went to the Roy's Hawaii website a few days ago, a pop-up message appeared. The message states that the mainland owners of Roy's Restaurants (United Ohana LLC) have decided to stop paying the Hawaiian operation for their gift cards. As a result, Hawaii locations are no longer able to accept gift cards sold by mainland locations, roysrestaurants.com, Costco, or any other gift card retailer.

Moving forward, gift cards purchased at Roy's Hawaii locations or at royyamaguchi.com are valid for use at Hawaii locations only. Likewise, I guess these gift cards don't work at mainland locations either. So then, gift cards to mainland Roy's restaurant locations are what you buy: This whole situation seems a little odd to me.

Why does the owner of the Rise restaurant chain refuse to cooperate with the original restaurant? Not to mention the whole situation is extremely confusing for patrons, because you'd think a Roy's gift card would work at any Roy's restaurant, right? But it is not so.

So to all my friends and family out there, don't buy Roy's gift cards at Costco thinking you can use them at the restaurant. And for all those visiting the islands, leave your home-purchased gift cards here. They don't work here. Personally, while I have a lot of respect and aloha for Chef Yamaguchi, I can't say I'm that big of a fan.

The dishes are kind of hit or miss for me and the price is a bit ridiculous if you ask me. For example, I spent over $70 on two entrees and one appetizer during lunch at Eating House Waikiki. I spent the same amount on three appetizers and a sandwich during lunch at Gwen's in Kailua.

But my experience is mostly with Mainland Roy's, which is corporately owned and not related to Roy Yamaguchi except to license his name.

I haven't eaten at the mainland locations, but I'm not surprised. I'm sure the food is better in Hawaii, but it's still not worth the money in my opinion.
