By Bus[Edit]
Foreigners no longer require a travel permit (Surat Jalan) to enter Aceh, but an Indonesian visa is required. You can get a 30-day visa on arrival at Banda Aceh Airport. Sometimes the embassy in Kuala Lumpur can issue a visa on the same day if you complete all the paperwork before noon, although this is supposed to only apply to Malaysian residents.
There are non-stop night buses, travel time from 9 to 13 hours - from Medan to Banda Aceh. Major bus companies such as PMTOH, Pelangi, Kurnia and Pusaka have offices on Jl. Gadja Mada, Medán. Prices range from IDR 110,000 for a regular seat bus to IDR 200,000 for a wide seat bus.

Minibuses can also take you to Banda Aceh from the Medan area, but journeys often take longer. Prices are slightly cheaper than on buses. It is also possible to go from Medan to Banda Aceh via Kutakane and Takengon. There will be 20 days in total.
Airlines fly daily between Banda Aceh and Medan (1 hour drive), Jakarta (2 hour 40 minute drive) or Singapore (almost 4 hours). There is no more bus to the airport. The only way to get to the city is by airport taxi which costs IDR 100,000 (2019).

The ferry from Penang no longer operates. From Ulhi Lhi, the port of Banda Aceh, you can reach Pulau Weh and Pulau Aceh. The main modes of transport are bekak (motorcycle taxis) and labi-labi (public minibuses). Due to the sharp influx of money after the tsunami, locals got used to inflated prices, but stabilization has now returned.

In the city center there are interesting fish, meat and vegetable markets.
There are also many small souvenir shops selling various local products. Hermes Palace is located in the center of Banda Aceh. The Mall has over 100 shops with a food court, supermarket and clothing stores. The basis of the Acehnese breakfast is delicious nasi, rice cooked in coconut milk, sold everywhere in coffee shops.
Food stalls and restaurants in Padang are open in the undamaged part of the city, and fruit carts are everywhere. There are some good coffee shops with a relaxing view of the rice fields around Uli Kareng, along Jl Tengku Iskander on the western edge of town.
There are three fast food restaurants in the mall: A&W, KFC and Pizza Hut. As with all travel, common sense and a good attitude are all you need to live in this small town. However, there are some points to keep in mind. Although Banda Aceh is currently safer than most European cities, it is still best not to go out alone after 10 pm.
