This unusual Marin County, California store is located outside the prison gates and offers a variety of inmate arts and crafts. That is, if you can enter. No, you don't have to go through security or deal with inmates or anything like that to shop there.
It always seems closed, even if the clock is set. I first heard about the shop in the late 90's and tried multiple times, unsuccessfully, to enter. Then, one day in late December about 11 years ago, I caught the attention of the director of the prison's new art program.

At the time, I didn't have the money to buy larger artwork (part of it was painted on the back of a blue and white striped mattress).

Instead, I bought cheap "Jailhouse Rocks," one for myself and one to use as a gift for the Yankee Swap I attended that night. From what I understand, inmates can buy cheap kits that they can assemble and then sell for a small profit. The kit for "Jailhouse Rocks" required real stones from the prison yard to be completed, which I found interesting.
There are all kinds of handmade items in the shop, anything from knitted and crocheted blankets (I asked about a baby inside a glass display and told a serial killer to knit it to knit) to the sketches to the craft kits mentioned earlier. I was told that good art, especially paintings, never made it to the workshop.
They are sent directly to the dealers who ordered them for collectors. I was also told that inmates, including convicted murderer Scott Peterson, trade shops in their cells as part of a craft program. Haven't been back in years but stopped by recently to show my friend.
