A Local Landmark Shopping Experience
the coast Located on the highway leading to the rapidly growing community of Los Angeles, Mission San Fernando became a popular stop for travelers on El Camino Real. The Convento, also known as the Long Building, served as a guest room for guests. Completed in 1822 after twelve years of construction, an eighteen-arch colonnade runs the entire length of the building.
This impressive structure, often mistaken for a real mission by visitors, has more than twenty rooms, fourteen on the ground floor, quarters for the resident clergy, a chapel, kitchen, wine, shop, reception room and guest rooms. A rich assortment of old memorabilia and furniture can be found on these walls.

The walls of this simple mission church are painted with Indian designs. Above the altar is a handmade wooden statue of Saint Ferdinand III, a missionary sent by the King of Spain. The mission church served as one side of the quadrangle, while the other three sides served as the living room and other rooms.
In early California the term mission included the entire quadrangle and other buildings of the settlement. A large courtyard with surrounding walls protects against possible Indian attacks.
