On December 26, 2004, a tsunami killed about 150,000 people in Banda Aceh. Some parts of the city were permanently under water. Since then, many aid organizations have been present to help with the rebuilding. The long-running conflict between the Acehnese Independence Movement (GAM) and the Indonesian Army (TNI) has been temporarily resolved with the peace agreement of 15 August 2005.
Since then, the peace process has proceeded quite smoothly. In 2006, the province held its first direct and democratic local elections. In 2007, the first democratically elected governor, Irwandi Yusuf, was appointed. Banda Aceh has a tropical rainforest climate and average temperatures are almost constant.
The average annual temperature of the city is 27 °C. However, the city has wetter and drier seasons, with June to August being the driest months of the year. Banda Aceh does not have a true dry season month with less than 60mm of rain on average.
By Bus[Edit]
On average, the city receives slightly less than 2,000 mm of precipitation per year. Foreigners no longer need a travel permit (Surat Jalan) to enter Aceh, but an Indonesian visa is required. A 30-day visa can be obtained upon arrival at Banda Aceh Airport. The embassy in Kuala Lumpur can sometimes process the visa on the same day if you complete all the paperwork before 5pm.

There are non-stop overnight buses with a travel time of 9-13 hours from Medan to Banda Aceh. Major bus companies such as PMTOH, Pelangi, Kurnia and Pusaka have offices on Jl. Gajah Mada, Medan. The price varies from Rp 110,000 in a standard bus to Rp 200,000 in a wide-seater bus.
Minibuses can also take you to Banda Aceh from the Medan area, but the journeys are usually longer. Prices are slightly cheaper than buses. It is also possible to cross from Medan to Banda Aceh via Kutacane and Takengon. It lasts a total of 20 hours.
Airlines fly daily between Banda Aceh and Medan (1 hour journey), Jakarta (2-40 minute journey) or Singapore (almost 4 hours). There is no longer a bus serving the airport. The only way around the city is by airport taxi, which costs Rp 100,000 (2019). When exiting the arrival gate, the taxi counter is on the far left.

Visa formalities at this airport are similar to other immigration gates in Indonesia. The nearest major (international) ferry terminal is Belawan Port near Medan. It receives ships from Batam, Indonesia (a common route when coming from Singapore). The Penang ferry no longer runs. From Ulhee-lhee, the port of Banda Aceh, you can go to Pulau Weh and Pulau Aceh.
The main modes of transportation are becak (motorcycle taxis) and labi-labi (public minibus). Due to the sudden influx of money after the tsunami, the local population has become accustomed to overpaying, but now stabilization has returned. Bus Terminal - Grand Mosque: Rp 8,000; Grand Mosque - Penayong: Rp 5000. In the city you should usually pay Rp 10,000. It is possible to go on a "tsunami tour" as there are still many boats and other memorials inland dedicated to the devastating day of 2004.

At the height of the post-tsunami relief effort, there were 850 NGOs operating, but many were non-Muslim religious organizations and their permits were not renewed by the Indonesian government. There are interesting fish, meat and vegetable markets in the city center.
There are also some small souvenir shops selling various local goods. Hermes Palace Shopping Center is located in the center of Banda Aceh. The shopping center has over 100 stores along with a food court, supermarket and clothing stores. Acehnese breakfast is nasi gurih, rice cooked in coconut milk, sold in cafes everywhere.
Food stalls and Padang restaurants are open all over the unspoilt part of town, and fruit carts are everywhere. Along Jl Tengku Iskander on the western edge of town, around Ulee Kareng, there are some nice cafes with soothing views of the rice fields. In the city center you can find three fast food chain restaurants A&W, KFC and Pizza Hut.

As with all travel, common sense and a good attitude are all you need to get by in this small town. However, there are some points to keep in mind. Although today Banda Aceh is safer than most European cities, it is still best not to go out alone after 10:00.

22.00. As Sharia law is implemented, drinking alcohol is not permitted, although it is still possible. Violation of locally perceived interpretations of Sharia law can lead to arrest by the Sharia police, along with corporal punishment and public ridicule of the offending Muslim. Muslim women are usually required to wear a headscarf in public.
